Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our highly successful water practice. This role will focus on model-based design excellence, conceptual process evaluation, and technical mentoring within our growing wastewater practice. The position can be based in Hamilton, ON or another Stantec office, with flexibility for hybrid work and travel to project sites.

Your Key Responsibilities

Lead and support process modeling and simulation for wastewater treatment and resource recovery facilities across North America. Conduct and interpret wastewater characterization and kinetic testing (sampling oversight or field testing) studies to inform model calibration and design decisions. Provide QA/QC support and oversight and ensure proper process modeling documentation and modeling approach consistency across regional teams in North America. Collaborate closely with process leads and project managers on early-phase (10-30%) process design, where modeling drives key decisions on capacity, energy, and nutrient removal. Mentor and train engineers on modeling best practices (BioWin, SUMO, GPS-X, etc.) through workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions, and project delivery. Collaborate closely with Sector Leads (North American and Regional) in development and set up of new process models (BioWin or SUMO) such as MABR, PdNA, and Densified Activated Sludge (DAS). The goal is to establish these models so that they will be used by process engineers in design. Contribute to the North America Modeling Excellence initiative, working with senior technical leaders to develop tools and guidance documents, workflows, and standards for model-based design. Support proposal development and client presentations for projects and research initiatives requiring advanced modeling capability. Engage with the industry associations like WEF and IWA by publishing papers and presenting them at conferences. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate modeling outputs into process, civil, and mechanical design. Support preliminary and detailed process design including P&ID development, process selection, equipment selection, design layout, and other general process design. Support commissioning efforts during construction. Participate in wastewater treatment plant troubleshooting, and performance optimization as needed.
Your Capabilities and Credentials

Recognized expertise in biological process modeling, calibration, and interpretation for conventional and advanced BNR systems. Strong understanding of wastewater characterization methods and kinetic testing. Excellent written and verbal communication; proven ability to explain complex modeling outcomes to clients and non-modelers. Demonstrated ability to lead technical QA/QC and mentor junior engineers. Experience using BioWin is required; familiarity with SUMO, GPS-X, or other modeling platforms is an asset. Willingness to travel periodically to project sites across North America
Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil/Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution. Master's degree preferred. Licensed Professional Engineer (P. Eng) in Canada or ability to obtain. 15+ years of relevant experience in wastewater process engineering and modeling.
