Summary Reporting directly to the Grid Modernization Center of Excellence (COE) Global Director, the Senior Power Systems and Protection Engineer is a key member of the Grid Modernization Engineering and Consulting Services and Advanced Automation Application (AAA) team. This position is responsible for advanced engineering and consulting services and solutions across transmission and distribution focused on protection, renewable integration, system studies and modeling.
This role will support delivering our GridNode solutions and Engineering and Consulting Services being engaged on application support, solution development, engineering execution, testing, and on-site activities if needed to drive Grid Automations solutions and services worldwide.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Be accountable for the Grid Modernization advanced Engineering and Consulting Services as well as support pre-sales activities, tendering, and operations needs from all GA regions. Grid Modernization Engineering and Consulting services include Wide Area Protection Schemes, Remedial Action Schemes, High-Speed Falling Conductor Protection, Transient and Dynamic studies, RTDS Modeling, as well as partnering with customers on designing, developing, and validating new solutions for their system.
  • Responsible for the execution of Engineering and Consulting Services Projects inside the Grid Modernization CoE. This includes schedule, customer communication, scope of work, budget, and quality.
  • Responsible for leading the development of a project technical scope of work and engineering effort estimations
  • Ability to partner with customers to develop new and innovative solutions
  • Lead customer and regional engagements to define customer requirements and develop innovative solutions
  • Mentor and train team members to expand the expertise of the CoE and regional teams
  • Execute engineering studies and analysis across the transmission, distribution, and industrial segments.
  • Design and testing of customized P&C solutions (both in house and at customer installations) to meet user specifications & requirements
  • Lead the development and design of advanced protection solutions
  • Develop test setups, test plans, and test case (including wiring diagrams and configurations of relays and controllers)
  • Perform in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) including Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) tests using real-time digital simulators
  • Prepare test reports, project reports, and project deliverables
  • Analyze and troubleshoot field cases involving GE or third-party relays
  • Lead the preparation of technical papers to be presented at conferences and other venues.
  • Participate in business development activities to grow services, including writing and presenting technical papers, delivering customer presentations,
  • - May require travel up to 10 - 30% of the time depending on projects
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering with very good understanding of power system applications and analysis.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in power systems and engineering studies
Desired Characteristics:
  • Willingness and ability to work across time zones to support global customers if required
  • Knowledge of power systems phenomena in transmission & distribution systems
  • Knowledge of power system protection relays, automation, control and communication protocols.
  • Ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers.

  • Technical skills to execute projects and write SOW proposals.
  • Experienced in study software and power system tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, PSSE, Power Factory, ASPEN, CAPE for automating the power system study process.
  • Understand of communication system protocols and architectures in electric power industry (DNP3, MODBUS, IEC61850, OpenFMB, etc.).
  • Experience with Opal-RT and/or RTDS Modeling
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter and dedicated team player with a sense of urgency and an ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Experience with transmission, distribution, and smart grid standards;
  • Effective communication skills including technical writing and presentations
  • Familiarity with IEC 61131-3 PLC Programming Languages.
