The Role
Verdyn
is developing a new multi-source DC/DC and AC/DC converter platform in the ~1 MW class. We're hiring a
Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer
to lead the
hardware
--from topology down to layout, build, and verification--while partnering closely with controls to deliver grid-ready, high-reliability product. Experience with high-voltage hardware and power-quality systems (STATCOM, DVR, UPS) is a big plus.
What you'll do
Own the power stage
: select and architect converter topologies (DC/DC and AC/DC), define operating points, size devices and passive components, and drive the electrical/mechanical partitioning.
Semiconductor & gate-drive design
: choose SiC/IGBT devices, design gate-drive circuits (desat/soft-turn-off, Miller clamp), manage dv/dt, common-mode, and switching loss trade-offs.
Magnetics & passives
: design/qualify inductors, transformers, busbars, snubbers, and capacitive energy storage for MW-class power conversion.
High-voltage design
: specify insulation systems, creepage/clearance, insulation coordination, surge protection, and partial-discharge risk mitigation for kV-class hardware.
Thermal & mechanical
: model and design heat-sinking/liquid cooling, validate junction/skin/proximity effects, and optimize packaging for manufacturability and service.
EMI/EMC and PQ performance
: plan filter architectures (CM/DM), meet conducted/radiated requirements, and ensure grid-friendly behaviour (THD, PF, flicker, harmonics).
Power-quality applications
: adapt the platform for STATCOM, DVR, and double-conversion UPS use-cases (series/shunt interfacing, ride-through, fault handling).
Schematic-to-PCB
: drive high-current, high-dv/dt layout (Kelvin source, current return control, shielding/slotting) and DFM with suppliers.
Prototype & test
: lead bring-up, HV/LV power tests (hipot, surge, PD where applicable), efficiency/thermals, and reliability (HALT/HASS).
Compliance & grid codes
: plan for applicable safety and interconnection standards; create test plans and documentation to certify.
Collaborate
: work with controls/firmware to align sensing, protection, and real-time limits; support HIL/SIL and site commissioning as needed.
Create IP
: contribute to patents, design notes, and test methods that differentiate Verdyn.
What you bring
Bachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering (or related).
8+ years
designing
power electronics hardware
at high power (hundreds of kW to ~1 MW), from concept through lab validation and field deployment.
Hands-on experience with
AC/DC (AFE/rectifier/inverter)
and
high-power DC/DC
converters, modulation methods, and protection schemes.
Strong command of

Proven
PCB layout
for high-current, high-voltage converters and EMI/EMC mitigation.
Magnetics design
(transformers/inductors), thermal design, and cooling system integration.
Practical
high-voltage safety
and test practice (lockout/tagout, safe energization, fault insertion).
Proficiency with
simulation tools
(e.g., PLECS, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape) for loss, thermal, EMI, and control-plant interactions.
Clear technical communication; disciplined documentation and change control.
Nice to have
Experience delivering
power-quality systems
(STATCOM, DVR, UPS) or
BESS/DC microgrids/EV fast charging
; grid-forming/following familiarity.

High-voltage lab methods:
hipot, partial discharge
, surge/impulse testing, and insulation coordination per standards.
Knowledge of relevant standards/codes (e.g.,
IEC 62477-1/-2, IEC 61800-5-1, UL 1741/CSA equivalents, IEEE 519/1547
, EMC).
Experience with reliability tools (DFMEA, derating analyses) and design for manufacturing/service.
Contributions to patents or trade-secreted hardware IP.
Why Verdyn
Build a new converter platform with real grid impact, not incremental tweaks.
Small, senior team; high ownership from day one.
Opportunity to shape both the
hardware architecture
and the
qualification path
to production.
