Senior Planner

Reporting to the Manager, Current and Long Planning, the Senior Planner is responsible for carrying out advanced and complex planning activities. This includes initiating, executing, and implementing long range planning projects and delivery of core services within the Current & Long Range Planning business unit. The Senior Planner will also play a leading role in reviewing and processing complex land development initiatives and applications such as the land use bylaw amendments.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Specific accountabilities for this position include implementation of the City\'s new Municipal Development Plan through managing the development, maintenance and evolution of the City\'s statutory and non-statutory planning documents and policies. The Senior Planner will lead and manage the City\'s ongoing New Land Use Bylaw project. They will provide support in undertaking strategic planning initiatives; will review, research, and provide preliminary evaluations for long range and current planning proposals; and will provide support in processing land development applications. This position will represent the City at Regional Boards, Committees and Working Groups; will participate in Intermunicipal initiatives and matters with neighboring municipalities; and will respond to planning referrals from adjacent municipalities. The Senior Planner will undertake research and analysis as necessary; and will prepare, write and present reports to the City Council, Council Committees, regional boards, and the Subdivision & Development Appeal Board. The position involves planning and conducting public and stakeholders\' engagements.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline such as social sciences, environmental design, urban design, or similar. A master\'s degree and eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred. The Senior Planner will have a minimum of five (5) years of related experience, with knowledge of the Municipal Government Act. Experience writing and interpreting planning policy, including the Land Use Bylaw and subdivision processes. They should have understanding, and experience is developing statutory and non-statutory long range plans such as Municipal Development Plans, Area Structure Plans, and Outline Plans. Project Management experience will be an asset. This position requires a high degree of computer literacy, with experience using Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Project, Excel, and Word.
