Union Benefits is looking to add to our Group Retirement Services team!

The Senior Pension Administrator plays an important role in delivering on this vision by providing advanced pension expertise, strategic support, and mentorship within the Group Retirement Services team. This role is responsible for managing complex pension-related matters, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting continuous improvement in service delivery and plan administration.

Primary Responsibilities



Provide leadership to pension administrator team members by identifying training needs, resource requirements, mentorship opportunities, and periodically support with performance management strategies. Oversee and provide guidance on complex, high-value, and special case calculations. Conduct primary peer reviews on calculations across multiple clients. Serve as a subject matter expert in FLA calculations, offering guidance and reviewing calculations for all clients. Serve as a backup for leadership as needed. Process Optimization: Evaluate and streamline project workflows currently outsourced to Eckler, identifying opportunities to transition processes back in-house for greater efficiency and control. Technical Tools Proficiency: Support the implementation and team adoption of the new administration system, ensuring accurate and consistent execution of monthly projects. Audit Coordination: Serve as a liaison for audit activities to support the CFO. Perform day-to-day administration for Defined Benefit, Defined Contribution Pension Plans, and Group RRSPs, including plan implementation, changes, member communications, and coordination with plan sponsors and insurance carriers. Communicate with members, union reps, actuaries, and auditors to determine benefit entitlements (e.g., death, retirement, termination, marriage breakdown), ensuring compliance with plan provisions and legislative requirements. Maintain accurate and up-to-date member records, ensure all documents and forms comply with regulatory standards, and manage the filing of amendments (e.g., Plan Texts, SIP&Ps) through the FSRA portal. Complete compliance and financial reporting, including supporting the preparation of Annual Information Returns, and supporting actuarial valuations and audits by providing required member data and documentation. Develop and maintain templates for various pension calculations. Identify and implement process improvements across all plans. Coordinate team efforts on projects related to plan wind-ups, missing member searches, and new client implementations. Train team members on legislative updates, plan document modifications, and other relevant changes. Other position-related duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills, and Education:



College Diploma or University Degree in business or insurance, or equivalent background and experience Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in pension administration, ideally within a multi-employer unionized environment Demonstrated ability to lead and guide team members, fostering knowledge-sharing and professional development within the pension team In-depth knowledge of pension legislation and regulatory frameworks, including CRA, PBA, FSRA, and fiduciary obligations. Proven track record in advising on and ensuring pension plan compliance Robust understanding of the design, amendment, and governance of both Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC) pension plans Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel for complex calculations Strong analytical & critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to analyze data, identify trends, and provide strategic insights Direct experience with Union Locals is considered a strong asset CEBS, GBA or other Pension Administration certification is a strong asset
