Job Description


As per the current Public Health Order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with PHSA as of October 26, 2021.


What you’ll do

  • Use a computerized on-line payroll system as well as word processing and spreadsheet software at an intermediate level.
  • Supervise three to ten payroll clerks, coordinate work assignments, determine related training and orientation requirements and participates in employee performance evaluations.
  • Supervise payroll clerks. This includes scheduling and coordinating work, prioritizing, advising, facilitating resolutions to problems and monitoring operations.
  • Train payroll staff, timekeepers and managers.
  • Participate in the planning, development and implementation of new or revised systems and procedures.
  • Prepare adjustment entries for issues such as vacation leave liabilities or seniority lists to ensure related reports and system requirements are met by analyzing and reconciling accounts to the general ledger, ensuring that payroll documentation is on file and determining where to action the payroll adjustment.
  • Verify timekeeping data entry by reconciling to the output reports and resolving discrepancies.
  • Oversee all deductions such as superannuation, income tax and employment insurance by receiving deduction reports, ensure they balance, adjusting and initiating cheque requisitions; maintain ongoing balances for year-end reporting purposes.
  • Generate T4 slips and reconcile to payroll register and Revenue Canada receipts.
  • Perform payroll duties such as batching and keying payroll, calculating manual cheques and retroactive payments. Calculate severance payments and sick leave payouts.
  • Maintain the timekeeping system by updating tables such as calendars, earnings eligibility rules, earnings rules, and job classes.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of timesheets and payroll records.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy workplace.



What you bring
  • Completed Grade 12, a recognized payroll course and have four years’ recent related experience including one year in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to supervise and organize work.
  • Ability to operate related hardware and software.



Job type: Casual (Casual is defined as on call with no guaranteed hours. Shifts can be called out via short call (1-5 hours of notice) or pre-booked)
Wage $27.02/hour + 12.6% in lieu
Location: 1795 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby BC V5C 6E3

Hours of work: 08:00 – 16:00 Monday to Friday
