Scope Of Position

As a member of the Operations team in the Orangeville Hub, the Senior Operator will contribute to the successful operation and maintenance of the drinking water and wastewater facilities operated by Clearford within the Hub. Reporting to the Hub Supervisor, the Senior Operator performs essential services to the public and ensures that our operations comply with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals, orders, and guidelines. The Senior Operator will report plant performance and complete sampling and will perform their functions and responsibilities within a team environment with the support of the Hub Supervisor, the Compliance team and other Clearford support services.

Major Responsibilities

(This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)
  • Perform all operational tasks maintenance (preventative and corrective) duties for assigned facilities, (including daily rounds, system monitoring, housekeeping, regulatory sampling and deliveries to lab);
  • Communicate using strong oral and written communication skills, to clearly describe operational items to members of the public, clients, government agencies, equipment supplies, and contractors/tradespeople, as well as internal staff;
  • Drive long distances, including during inclement weather;
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals and orders, guidelines;
  • Adjust, inspect and evaluate equipment and process performance in order to optimize efficiency and effectiveness, in accordance with established procedures;
  • Inspect, repair and maintain potable water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance to required standards;
  • Operate, monitor, repair and control water treatment plants, wells, pumping stations, reservoirs, valves, hydrants and meters;
  • Inspect, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, including disinfection equipment, pumps and control systems;
  • Operate, monitor, and repair surface Water Treatment Plants, Well-Based Distribution and Supply Systems, Pumping Stations, Reservoirs including: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), various digital and analog instrumentation and control systems, numerous monitoring, reporting and communication systems, pressure tanks, filtration systems, continuous online analyzers, and related appurtenances, valves, hydrants etc.;
  • Operate, monitor, and repair wastewater treatment plants with varying degrees of complexity, including Moving Bed Biological Reactors (MBBRs), Membrane Biological Reactors (MBRs), Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs), Waterloo Bio-Filters (WBSs) Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs), Ultra-Filtration Membrane Filtration (UFMF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) treatment systems, Lagoons, Septic Systems, using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems along with less sophisticated control systems, and Landfill Leachate and Sewage Pumping Stations, and manholes, etc.;
  • Conduct water testing and sampling (bacteriological and chemical) using various meters and spectrophotometer;
  • Collect, package and transport process samples in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;
  • Conduct in-house laboratory work utilizing handheld monitors (colorimeters, spectrophotometers)
  • Carry out process changes required to optimize treatment performance;
  • Comply with the on-call rotation schedule including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays and is able to respond to alarms at various sites;
  • Interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and assists with asset data collection from sites to upload into a Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS);
  • Participate in the commissioning of new treatment plants, including process optimization, instrumentation and control as well as SCADA.
  • Maintain logs and records pertaining to system performance and conditions, in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;
  • Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by using appropriate PPE and completing all required Health and Safety training;
  • Promote a positive working environment, and puts forward a professional approach with the clients, establish and maintain relationships between Clearford and the client.
  • Proactively, or by management request, maintain current training and pursue advanced certification;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Experience, & Competencies

  • Class 2 Wastewater Treatment license;
  • Class 1 Wastewater Collection license;
  • Class 1 Water Treatment or Limited Surface Water (LSW) license;
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent;
  • Higher level of operator\xe2\x80\x99s licensing, qualifications and/or experience considered an asset;
  • Post-Secondary Education in the Environmental, Chemical/Biological, or Engineering field considered and asset;
  • Training and certification in Confined Space Entry (CSE), Working at Heights, First Aid, Lock-Out Tag-Out, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods are considered strong assets;
  • Good understanding of the latest technologies in the Water and Wastewater industry;
  • Basic knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations (for example, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Drinking Water Standards, Drinking Water Protection Regulations, Safe Drinking Water Act, Spills Act, etc.);
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft software packages including: Access, Project and Teams, as well as web-based data entry systems for payroll and expenses;
  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and is familiar with various types of tools;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and a willingness to develop and grow these on the job;
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver\xe2\x80\x99s license, clean driver\xe2\x80\x99s abstract, and access to a vehicle.

Hours of Work and Travel Expectations

  • The Senior Operator will be required to work outside of regular business hours to facilitate the Operation and Maintenance of the area;
  • The Senior Operator will be required to work on-call shifts on a rotation basis;
  • There will be frequent travel throughout the area and periodic travel to other areas in Ontario.

What We Offer

  • The hourly rate for the Senior Operator starts from $30.00 with overtime after 44 hours (calculated weekly) at 1.5X hourly rate, and 2.0X hourly rate for working Statutory Holidays;
