The Senior Materials Analysis Technician reports to the Senior Materials Technologist and is responsible for carrying out a wide range of testing functions that support Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) construction, maintenance, and research programs. The role provides technical direction and serves as a paraprofessional resource for technicians in the Winnipeg Central Lab, primarily within the Concrete section but also across other laboratory areas as required.
Duties:
The Senior Materials Analysis Technician performs specialized technical work and engineering-related laboratory analysis, including the testing, evaluation, and reporting of results for concrete materials and products used in MTI projects. In addition to concrete testing, the position may also conduct and support testing activities in the aggregate, bituminous, and soils sections to meet operational needs. The Senior Material Analysis Technician is responsible for offering technical guidance and support for MTI's quality assurance, quality control and materials research testing programs, helping ensure that all materials used in MTI projects meet established standards, specifications, and performance requirements.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Municipal or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology and must be eligible for registration with the Certified Technicians and Technologist Association of Manitoba (CTTAM). An equivalent combination of relevant education and related experience may be considered.
Extensive experience in material testing related to highway construction materials, including concrete, aggregates, bituminous & binder, and soils & geotechnical products, in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, CSA, CCIL, and MTI/MEB (Materials Engineering Branch) testing standards and procedures.
Knowledge of construction specifications, departmental (MTI) policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Comprehensive knowledge and experience of general and specialized material testing related to concrete products, including creation and verification of concrete mix designs, combined with aggregate, soils & geo-technical, bituminous (Superpave and Marshall mix designs) with related applied materials research experience.
Knowledge of the Department's (MTI) Occupational Safety, Health and Risk Management Policies and Procedures.
Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts, other branches/ divisions, and stakeholders.
Excellent written communication skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, prepare applicable correspondence and associated reports for a wide range of audience.
Excellent verbal communication skills.
Ability to analyze problems, expedite decisions or recommend alternative solutions to exercise tact and diplomacy to build consensus.
Experience working with standard office equipment, computers and software database applications including Microsoft Office software package (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
Ability to work independently and cooperatively to establish effective working relationships with management and support staff in a team environment.
Strong Organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
Desired: Knowledge of financial management skills such as periodical cost recovery for testing services, ability to follow MTI's procurement guidelines for purchase of lab equipment and services.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Must be able to work in a controlled laboratory environment and can be exposed to the following notable hazards as described in the Health and Safety Work Practices (noise, moving parts, hot materials, bending/lifting, carrying/twisting, hazardous material, & electrical shock etc.)
Must be able to travel on an occasional basis for concrete field product evaluations.
Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including continuous standing, walking, sitting and able to lift minimum of 25 kg test samples as required by applicable test procedures.
Must be able to work overtime on weekdays and statutory holidays as required.
Must possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License.
