Position: Sr. Manager, Safety, Security & Workplace Claims

This position achieves the Genuine Merchant Strategy by ensuring that the highest standards of health and safety, food safety, and security are maintained and regulatory compliance is met throughout the organization. This position works closely with other departments, external business partners and government agencies to assess and respond to incidents and identify potential risks that may have an impact on health, safety wellbeing and security.

The Sr. Manager ensures that all reasonable and practical measures of prevention, protection and compliance are identified and executes strategic plans through the development and delivery of programs, policies, and procedures.

What you\'ll do:

Leadership and People Management:

Direct Reports:

  • Supporting, mentoring, coaching, and training Team Members to maintain the highest level of productivity
  • Hiring, motivating, and developing Team Members; nurturing top talent and performance managing opportunity talent
  • Building talent bench for the team, department, and company
  • Providing support, scheduling, training, and leadership
  • Creating a highly engaged team by soliciting and providing feedback on ways to improve
Indirect Reports:
  • Providing support, training and leadership to the Joint Health and Safety Committees and Safety Champions
  • In the absence of the Sr. Director, providing temporary or acting leadership to the department
Business Partners:
  • Collaborate with management teams across the organisation in the development and execution of core programs
  • Liaise with insurers on matters with potential liability
  • Manages the performance of health and safety, food safety and security service providers
  • Liaises with municipal, provincial, and federal government agencies and officials
Health and Safety
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Team Member and Guest safety programs, policies, and procedures
  • Exercise functional authority in essential matters of health and safety
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate compliance and program effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Acts, regulations, and recognized industry standards
  • Select and maintain vendors and service providers
  • Contribute to the design of buildings and workspaces, procurement of equipment and the development of new programs by other departments
  • Direct the submission of insurance claims to the WSIB
  • Liaise with WSIB case managers claims management consultant to close gaps and move claims through the settlement process
Food Safety
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of food safety programs, policies, and procedures
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate compliance and program effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Acts, regulations, and recognized industry standards
  • Select and maintain vendors and service providers
  • Contribute to the design of buildings and workspaces, procurement of equipment and the development of new programs by other departments
  • Liaise with insurers on matters with potential liability
Security
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of loss prevention and security programs, policies, and procedures
  • Exercise functional authority in essential matters of loss prevention
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate compliance and program effectiveness.
  • Ensuring investigations are completed into matters of internal and external theft
  • Ensuring appropriate physical security applications are used to deter, detect, and delay unauthorized activity
  • Providing consultation and expertise to management teams on current and emerging risks related to internal and external theft
  • Select and maintain vendors and service providers
  • Contribute to the design of buildings and workspaces, procurement of equipment and the development of new programs by other departments
Reporting
  • Audits and inspections are completed on a scheduled basis
  • Monitor incident reporting, identify regularly provide management teams with reporting and analysis to highlight problems areas and achievements
  • Policy and procedure files are maintained and updated on a regular frequency
  • KPIs and targets are established
  • Review business intelligence data, such as financial KPIs (sales, gross margin, shrink, insurance costs, etc.), audit and inspection results, injury reports, CRM cases and Safety Scorecards to determine areas of risk and to deploy resources in those areas to resolve risk gaps
Training and Communication
  • Develop, deliver, and continuously improve employee training and development and core training programs
  • Programs, updates, and other information are effectively communicated internally to Team Members and externally to Guests communications, deliver, and continuously improve internal and external communications
  • Financial
  • Contribute to the development of operational expense budgets for the department
  • Contribute to the development of capital expense budgets for the department
  • Contributes to the overall profitability of the company through department expense optimization, reduction of costs associated with Team Member injuries, food complaints, and theft
What we are looking for:
  • 7-10 years\' experience in a related/combined health & safety, and/or food safety and/or loss prevention role
  • Post-secondary education preferred, preferably in Occupational Health and Safety or Public Safety
  • Industry certifications (e.g., CHRP) preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of health and safety practices
  • General knowledge of food safety practices
  • General knowledge of security and loss prevention practices
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of prevention principles and practices
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, confidentiality, and professionalism in all aspects of the role; demonstrates keen awareness of urgent and important issues and findings
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision
  • Strong coaching and relationship management skills
  • Actively involved in industry associations with a strong knowledge of current industry trends
  • Strong computer skills - Office 365 including Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams and Sharepoint, Microsoft Dynamics
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong facilitation, coaching and relationship management skills
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a standard office, retail store, warehouse, cold storage, and production environments with participation in meetings in-person and online
  • Availability for evening and weekend on-call shifts, rotating with other department Team Members, and to respond to after hours emergency calls
  • Travel may be required
