The Opportunity

Our Special Asset Management Unit (SAMU) team is growing, and we are adding a Senior Manager, SAMU to manage and adjudicate various levels of complex and highly sensitive critical client relationships in the high risk small and medium business portfolio. These files have higher complexity than satisfactory relationships with complex security realization and heavy credit administration requirements. The successful incumbent will act as a critical partner managing small business, high risk borrowing by minimizing Canadian Western Bank\xe2\x80\x99s overall risk with a focus towards the rehabilitation and recovery of the small business client lending relationships. Additionally, this role will manage a number of high risk small and medium business accounts ranging in exposure up to $3MM.

Key deliverables

Relationship Management & More

Manage the sensitive nature of client relationships for identified high risk small business portfolios while upholding organizational values within every interaction.

Navigate complex, highly sensitive and confidential small business client relationships with a focus on retention and rehabilitation, balancing the risk and interests of the organization.

Develop client relationships under stressful conditions, find comfort with frank and direct discussions with the borrowers while maintaining client engagement.

Perform key due diligence practices, such as meeting with high risk small business clients to understand their situation, exposure, and collateral to establish an initial course of action for account resolution.

Maintain expert knowledge of small business clients and prospects, market, competition and economic factors in conjunction with a robust understanding of key business issues and trends.

Identify and respond to changes in the business environment, establishing action plans to address small business client\xe2\x80\x99s issues and priorities.

Develop and execute a relationship strategy for high risk small business clients, identifying the key issues surrounding the relationship and implementation of the strategy.

Provide recommendations to retain and restructure high risk small business accounts or to exit the account, based on CWB\xe2\x80\x99s risk appetite. Manage the client relationship and support the delivery of recommendations.

Support the assessment and approval of new and renewal credit applications with recommendations to achieve a quality, well-balanced and profitable portfolio as required.

Provide support with financial analysis in respect to credit applications for larger commercial transactions as required.

Risk Mitigation

Responsible for the overall day to day management of high risk small business accounts and the recovery and restructuring of loans to an acceptable level of risk or to maximize recovery of capital.

Review complex and sensitive small business loans, perform oversight of watch loans, provide assistance to Branch Lenders.

Responsible for managing high risk small business files and identifying further deteriorating trends within the assigned portfolio that can result in material risk/losses to the organization.

Ensuring day to day management of files is at a senior level and avoiding bias in decision making.

Work with internal resources and external vendors in maximizing repayment under realization, collection and liquidation, where rehabilitation or recovery of a small business file is not possible.

Leverage deep knowledge of legal requirements for collections, collateral management, and valuation and demand of assets.

Complete all underwriting ensuring all aspects are correctly set up, updated and reflective of the transition following prescribed process and policy.

Undertake due diligence on business plans and pro-forma statements, recommend and execute on suitable solutions.

Manage all day to day activities, recommend and execute on client strategy, coordinate with 3rd party professionals and internal stakeholders.

Reporting

Responsible for adhering to reporting requirement on the high risk small business portfolio, that meets internal and regulatory controls.

Responsible for providing regular reporting to leadership for high risk small business files.

Accountable for completion of the necessary initial recommendations along with quarterly reports as needed. Responsible for timely completion of quarterly and annual file updates are required.

Providing updates to leader on their high risk small business portfolio, reporting through the regular monitor and control process including review of arrears, out of order reporting, audit reports, CRM reporting and credit responses for weaknesses including covenant breaches, financial deterioration, arrears, security impairment and other material adverse changes.

Successful incumbent

This role requires an individual with an astute intellect with a strong sense of ownership and independent accountability. Possessing the capacity to manage multiple priorities requires confidence balanced with the self-awareness to engage with, and advocate for required resources to deliver results. They will possess a willingness to actively solution and participate in client relationship building, demonstrating their financial expertise and risk analysis and mitigation abilities. Professional acumen, communication, and decorum is required to translate and navigate complex situations and technical information into practical business-based language for a broad range of audiences. The individual will also have an ability to underwrite and support more complex and larger commercial transactions as required. Strong technology skills are required: MS Office, baking and underwriting systems, Adobe forms, and other financial statement analysis and accounting software programs.

Core knowledge requirements

Post secondary education in a commerce, finance or accounting or equivalent experience is required.

Demonstrated experience & abilities

Minimum of five years of strong lending background in commercial and small business lending (Small Business, Commercial, Real Estate and Equipment Finance) with a preference for individuals who have direct experience managing problem accounts and work-out situations.

Minimum of three years of direct underwriting experience coupled with working knowledge of Moody\xe2\x80\x99s Financial Analyst.

Exceptional skills in client engagement and retention, with a best for clients focus

Strong organizational, analytical, negotiation and mediation skills

Understanding of legal issues around BIA, insolvency and asset recovery

Ability to build effective relationships with various stakeholders and parties (Clients, Branch Managers, Account Managers, Legal and Insolvency professionals).

Sound problem solving skills and solid judgement. Excellent risk analysis skills.
