The Senior Manager, BBC Commercial Credit (St. Catharines) is accountable for (i) the quality of credit applications submitted by respective account managers; and (ii) maintaining controls for credit and operational risk within the Commercial loan portfolio. The role is responsible for approving, amending or declining credit applications within delegated authority (or making recommendations if beyond delegated authority) in a timely and efficient manner, and ensuring risk is appropriate and superior Member experience is maintained.

Facilitating Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s ability to meet financial objectives related to the profitable growth of the business lending portfolio is critical to success. The Senior Manager must employ an appropriate risk appetite to achieve business results while demonstrating a high level of employee engagement. Key competencies include very strong attention to detail, superior communication, diligence, objectivity, insight, flexibility and creativity.

A culture of shared, proactive risk management is to be fostered. Regular efforts are required to ensure a positive environment prevails between Banking and Business Credit Department, through open communication on opportunities for improvement with respect to credit applications and due diligence.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assess all credit applications, ensuring they provide a high quality of risk assessment, credit structure, due diligence, and credit presentation.
  • Adjudicate Commercial loan applications within delegated authority and assist in the administration of the Commercial loan portfolio within the framework of credit management policies.
  • Ensure business loans represent acceptable risk and return to Meridian.
  • Apply sound credit adjudication techniques based on knowledge and practical experience.
  • Ensure the overall portfolio is comprehensively monitored and controlled within acceptable and established parameters. Ensure policies and procedures are adhered to in accordance with the Credit Procedures Manual.
  • Develop and implement strategies to return high risk accounts to performing status where possible.
  • Provide feedback to Banking regarding balance between Member risk and pricing.
  • Facilitate portfolio growth in your region of responsibility, supporting the BBC to meet or exceed annual sales, revenue, volume & new Member objectives with quality controls in place.
  • Assist in executing the BBC\'s business plan, goal setting and growth strategies.
  • Ensure that all BBC staff within the region of responsibility are knowledgeable of and operate within applicable regulatory and compliance guidelines and Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s policies & procedures (including but not limited to: AML, KYC, Privacy, Systems & Information Security, etc). Ensure staff are knowledgeable of and comply with Bank and Industry Codes of Conduct.
  • Understand changing market conditions and remain knowledgeable of relevant industry issues.
  • Identify and respond to changes in the business environment, establishing action plans to address Member issues and priorities. Resolve Member & credit issues to deliver a positive Member experience.
  • Build new relationships and deepen existing Member relationships by consistently differentiating Meridian from competition by providing a unique credit offering to individual Commercial Members.
  • Coach Commercial Services team in meeting business development targets by recommending alternatives in structure or pricing to meet the needs of Members and to adhere to Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s risk management policies and credit appetite.
  • Maintain ongoing coaching/training/mentoring for Business Banking partners to improve credit writing skills, proactive risk management and understanding of the adjudication process. Coach Banking employees in developing creative credit solutions that add value for our Members.
  • Participate in employee engagement impact planning sessions, progress meetings and activities, to increase the level of workforce engagement.
  • Enhance Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s brand by participating at network events in your community.
  • Recommend, introduce and refer appropriate Business Partners and products to Members that are aligned to their needs.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • Broad Financial Services knowledge with a minimum of 10 years of Commercial lending/adjudication experience in various industries. Knowledge of real estate, construction, hospitality, or OpCo financing considered assets.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to collaborate as a pro-active genuine partner.
  • University Degree in Business or Finance (or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Broad knowledge of special supervision requirements for risk mitigation including collection / work out techniques and remedies.
  • Advanced understanding of a wide range of Commercial business financing structures, standards, and techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of business financial statements, business case proposals and cash flow analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial account operating procedures and related banking services.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to quickly prioritize and resolve critical issues as they arise.
  • Proven ability to provide clear communication, advice and guidance consistent with Meridian values.
