Zurich Canada is currently looking for a Senior Liability Underwriter to analyze and underwrite new and renewal business of higher technical complexity, delivering exceptional service and supporting Zurich's strategic growth in the Canadian market. This role can be located in Calgary or Vancouver.
Reporting to the AVP, Liability Manager, Western Region, you will be responsible for utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting framework, managing accounts within delegated authority levels, and partnering with brokers and customers to provide tailored insurance solutions.

What you will do
Underwrite and analyze new and renewal business within delegated authority levels on assignments of higher technical complexity.
Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating annual rules.
Utilize The Zurich Way of Underwriting framework to ensure disciplined underwriting decisions.
Develop, maintain, and collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and business needs.
Provide guidance to lower-level underwriters and colleagues as needed.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with distributors (agents and brokers) to support business retention and acquisition.
Act as a key contact and trusted advisor for assigned brokers and clients, supporting Zurich's sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers.
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities, conducting detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth potential.
Qualify accounts in line with Zurich's underwriting appetite and business strategy.
Conduct broker, customer, and on-site visits with clear, well-prepared objectives.
Negotiate terms and conditions and close deals to ensure profitable business growth.
Cross-sell additional lines of business to increase product density and deepen account relationships.
Participate actively in sales team meetings for assigned brokers and territories.
Manage a pipeline of qualified opportunities 90-120 days prior to effective date, ensuring timely engagement and execution.
Accurately calculate target pricing by using underwriting tools effectively.
Measure exposures, analyze risk, and determine appropriate coverage and pricing.
Issue quotes, set coverage terms, and service accounts including declinations and cancellations.
Lead marketing presentations for assigned agents and brokers.
Provide technical advice to help customers solve problems and improve their businesses.
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with customers, anticipating their needs and identifying opportunities to add value.
Lead short-term (3-9 month) defined-scope projects related to underwriting, process improvement, or customer service.
Conduct due diligence on transactions to assess risk profiles and ensure regulatory compliance.
Independently collect and analyze data using The Zurich Way of Underwriting, making informed recommendations within authority levels.
Evaluate underwriting processes, implement technical standards and controls, and identify opportunities for improvement.
Handle and resolve customer queries, providing advice and supporting account development.
Participate in business travel as required and maintain flexibility for extended hours during peak periods.
Maintain a valid driver's license and ensure regular, predictable attendance and in-office visibility as required.
