Position Overview University Legal Services is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Senior Legal Counsel. University Legal Services provides legal support to University of Calgary faculties, business units, and senior administration. This busy, multi-disciplinary team, practices in a variety of areas, including corporate/commercial, procurement, construction, real estate, information technology, intellectual property, privacy, employment and labour, human rights, governance, administration, policy and procedure, and litigation. Reporting to the University\'s Associate General Counsel (Commercial, Employment & Privacy), the successful candidate will work with a team of lawyers responsible for delivering effective legal solutions and advice as it relates to commercial matters and transactions in the field of post-secondary education.

The Senior Legal Counsel will focus on supporting a variety of commercial agreements, many of which are unique to the post-secondary sector. In addition, they will provide sound legal advice and drafting support related to advancement, procurement, international, and information technology matters. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide timely and responsive client service.
  • Draft clear and concise legal documents and correspondence.
  • Provide guidance and advice to various faculties and departments on the legal aspects of their operations.
  • Act as a legal resource in all matters as delegated.
  • Develop knowledge and expertise in specialized areas pertaining to University operations.
  • Interpret and apply University policies and procedures and legislation affecting University operations.
  • Develop workshops and other educational initiatives on a variety of legal matters affecting the University community.
  • Assist with the coordination of services with internal and external legal counsel to achieve the most effective legal service for the University.
  • Develop a variety of clear and concise annotated template agreements for use by administrative units.
  • As requested by Associate General Counsel, assume responsibility for special projects and other initiatives.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • JD or LLB, and eligible for admission to the Alberta Bar.
  • At least 5 years of post-call experience in the general practice of business law (corporate/commercial) is preferred; however, equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience negotiating complex commercial agreements.
  • Experience with procurement, information technology, gift or international agreements is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to client service.
  • Strong drafting and negotiating skills, with demonstrated strength in risk and legal analysis.
  • Superior oral and written presentation skills.
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to address legal issues by developing solutions that are practical and mitigate risk.
  • A proven ability to handle multiple files successfully, working independently and proactively, with a wide variety of stakeholders and competing deadlines.
  • Cooperative, team player attitude and excellent interpersonal skills, with a pragmatic and collaborative approach to handling files and completing projects.
  • Experience acting as legal counsel for post-secondary, health care provider, and/or public sector clients is considered an asset.
