Position Summary
The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives provides strategic leadership to advance JIBC's commitment to Indigenization and Reconciliation. Reporting to the Director, the role supports the integration of Indigenous knowledges and pedagogies across curriculum, planning, and operations, and guides institution-wide initiatives aligned with the Living Indigenization Plan. They model JIBC's commitment to Indigenization and Reconciliation.
This role fosters collaboration, builds internal capacity, and supports respectful relationships with communities and partners. Through leadership and cross-functional influence, the position ensures Indigenous perspectives are embedded in JIBC's learning environment and institutional culture. As a champion for culturally grounded learning, the role fosters collaboration with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, faculty, and staff to ensure teaching practices incorporate storytelling, oral traditions, and culturally grounded methods that honour Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives works to embed Indigenous perspectives and worldviews into teaching, research, and student supports. They lead projects and initiatives strengthening Indigenous engagement, building internal capacity, and shaping culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments.
Responsibilities include leading work on complex curriculum (programs, courses, etc.) development initiatives, supporting implementation, reviewing and evaluating, and overseeing continuous improvement. The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives leads the advancement and integration of Indigenous pedagogies across the institution.
The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives leads and implements projects and initiatives, providing strategic advice and implementation support. This role represents JIBC in sector-wide projects and collaborates with community and academic partners to advance shared goals and support the Indigenization of JIBC systems, processes, and services, and to embed Indigenous knowledges and practices into planning and operations. They use Indigenous student data and feedback to inform planning and policy development.
In this role, the incumbent will lead or contribute to learning and awareness events, as well as institutional events.
The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives participates in the development of team plans and initiatives, championing strategic and business goals. They assist with operational planning, workload coordination, and tracking of Office initiatives. In this role, the successful candidate will supervise the Program Planner, Office of Indigenization, and provide leadership and mentorship to OI staff to foster a positive, healthy, collaborative, and productive team environment. They help team members define shared and individual goals and create opportunities for growth and development. The Senior Lead, Indigenous Initiatives also leads change management within their team.
Through cross-institutional influence, community partnerships, and student-centered advocacy, this role ensures Indigenous perspectives are reflected in JIBC's academic design, organizational culture, and strategic direction--helping the institution move forward in meaningful and sustainable ways on its journey of Indigenization and Reconciliation.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Due to the cultural nature of the role, and in honouring JIBC's commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), preferential consideration and/or hiring will be given to qualified applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit).

  • Master's Degree from a recognized institution in a relevant field and a combination of experience, skills and knowledge of Indigenous knowledge systems and decolonization.
  • Courses in adult education, instructional skills, project management and change management are ideal.
  • An extensive, in-depth knowledge of cultural protocols, history, and cultural values of Indigenous peoples.
  • Knowledge and understanding regarding Indigenous post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or supervising staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Proven experience in the course/program design, development, implementation, and evaluation of education and training for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners, communities, and organizations.
  • Experience with departmental planning and goal setting.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to solve problems and successfully resolve complex issues.
  • Financial acumen, and the ability to effectively manage budgets and expenditures.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through complexity and change, adapting approaches to reflect diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and community needs while advancing inclusive and equitable outcomes.
  • Proven success in building collaborative relationships across roles, departments, and communities by fostering environments grounded in cultural safety, mutual respect, and shared accountability.
  • Skilled in navigating organizational transformation ensuring that diverse voices are heard and reflected in decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong internal and external relationships, use effective conflict resolution skills, and influence others to achieve common objectives.
  • Models respectful and inclusive workplace behaviours, and demonstrates a commitment to meaningful outcomes in diversity, equity, and Indigenization.
  • Ability to think innovatively and creatively in planning and developing a fresh approach to existing activities, with a continuous improvement perspective and incorporating best practices.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven time management skills, with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. Must be an independent self-starter who works well in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in computer software, such as Microsoft Office.
  • A minimum of 7 years of recent and relevant experience in the fields of adult education, Indigenous community engagement or development, and program design and delivery. Or a related combination of education and experience will be considered.

Fair Comparison/Excluded: We offer a total compensation package that includes a benefit plan, which includes Extended Health and Dental Benefits after three months, and enrollment in the College Pension Plan upon hire. In addition, we offer 20 vacation days and 10 Personal Days annually (pro-rated in first year), as well as generous other leave entitlements.
Salary Range:
$104,425.00 to $122,850.00 annually - Fair Comparison Faculty Excluded Compensation Salary Grid 11
The Compensation Range shown reflects JIBC's range for the role: between 85% and 100% of the sector range control point. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between 85% - 94% of the control point, based on the knowledge, qualifications and experience for the role, with exceptions in the 95% - 100% range.

Work Arrangements:
