The position of \'Senior Land Use Planner/Urban Designer\' requires a minimum of 10 years of progressive development planning experience and at minimum has provisional membership with Alberta Professional Planners Institute/Canadian Institute of Planners (APPI/CIP). Preference would be considered to those having previously or currently working within a consulting office setting including overseeing private development planning applications as the lead planner/project manager responsible for advancing applications. The candidate should have a demonstrated strong desire to build a career in planning, project management and business development.

Things you\'ll need to have:

  • Guide planning related projects as the lead planner/project manager
  • Collaborate with other disciplines related to the land development process
  • Oversee and assig work to other planning staff within the practice while fostering the experience and growth of staff
  • Prepare and supervise the completion of Planning Rationale and Urban Design Reports and various applications and related planning research, letters and other planning related tasks as may be required
  • Mentor junior staff and encourage a team environment
  • Proven understanding of the Municipal Government Act and development approvals in Alberta will be considered an asset
  • Cultivate Business Development with contacts within the planning and land development profession
  • Lead highest and best use in diligence studies and other planning studies as required
  • Review and check plans (draft plans, conceptual plans, site plans etc.) for conformity to Statutory Plan, Municipal Standards and Zoning By-law regulations
  • Preparatio of proposals and contracts for clients for not only planning specific assignments but also for multi-disciplinary projects
  • Responsible for report writing, due diligence reports, proposals for potential projects, and responses to municipal comments
  • Conduct research for proposals and reports-researching municipal environmental and energy conservation efforts and programs
  • Participate in all aspects of municipal, and land use planning with a preferred focus related to subdivision planning, site design and/or urban design
  • Oversee preparation of municipal planning documents and policy (MDP, ASP, NSP and zoning by-laws)
  • Play a direct role in the provision of consulting services to the land development industry, including project design and planning approvals such as Land Use applications, Development Permit Applications and Subdivision Applications
  • Prioritize a variety of tasks while providing superior client service.
  • Inform and lead Public Consultation Process from process design through to implementation
  • Ability to lead projects and work autonomously
  • Make presentations to small and large audiences
  • Prepare reports and presentations
  • Assess development situations from competing points of view
Qualifications

You\'ll need to have:
  • Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Geography or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience related to the land development process
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in APPI/CIP
  • Experience in project management strongly preferred
  • Business development experience for team growth
  • Strong understanding of Alberta\'s provincial legislative planning framework, including the Municipal Government Act, Subdivision Regulations, various Municipal Development Plans, Area Structure Plans, and Zoning By-Laws
  • Awareness of Public Consultation Processes and ability to contribute directly to them
  • Experience with public speaking and presentations
  • Ability to work individually or in a team environment
  • Strong Analytical and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge and strong proficiency with MS Office, in particular Word, Powerpoint and Excel
  • Experience with CAD and GIS preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a high attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • General awareness of development pro-formas
  • Demonstrates personal initiative and can work with minimal supervision
