Recruitment range: $79,376- $87,518

starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: $103,243

salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases. Job Summary

Mandate:



The Senior Laboratory Instructor (SLI) in the Department of Biology is responsible for the design, coordination, and supervision of undergraduate teaching laboratories, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in both foundational and advanced biological techniques. The role also provides instructional leadership, logistical oversight, and mentorship within the lab teaching team. This position requires a background in plant sciences.


Objectives:




Develop and implement lab exercises and materials for first- to fourth-year undergraduate biology courses. Support and supervise teaching assistant lab instructors, Scientific Assistants, and work study students. Manage large, multi-section labs in areas such as biodiversity, physiology, and cell biology, among others. Assist with upper-level labs requiring knowledge of diversity, physiology, and molecular biology of plants and animals. Upper-level labs are likely to include teaching statistical analysis. Oversee administrative tasks including student communication, grading frameworks, accommodations, online teaching resources (such as Brightspace), course budgets, and materials/equipment use. Contribute to departmental operations through participation in committees. Job Requirements
This position requires a Master of Science degree plus 1-3 years of research experience, a background in diverse biological subjects, teaching experience in a post-secondary institution and supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


In addition, this position requires:


Excellent communication and leadership skills Excellent organizational and laboratory skills, and efficient work habits Strong quantitative skills and experience in data analysis and statistics Demonstrated experience with practical laboratory techniques and equipment, and strong digital skills Demonstrated experience with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel), and learning management systems (e.g. Brightspace) Proficiency in mentoring Understanding and recognizing the needs of undergraduate students Ability to make laboratory exercises engaging, interesting, and current Ability to build and manage teams effectively Ability to build consensus, and to work co-operatively and collaboratively with colleagues to maintain consistency across the undergraduate laboratories.
