The Senior Interior Designer is responsible for the design and project management of interior upgrade projects for Chartwell Retirement, while ensuring Chartwell standards, branding, project timelines, and budgets are met.
Key Accountabilities
Must be fluent in English (read, write, speak), bilingualism in French is an asset.
Must be able to work on multiple major projects at a time, including the interior redesign and redevelopment of entire properties.
Work to a brief; including conducting preliminary design investigations to determine Stakeholder priorities and requirements.
Carry out research, to ensure that proposed plans are technically feasible and permissible by Code.
Define and articulate design needs, scopes of work, set schedules and budgets.
Inspect and survey buildings, including conducting site and field measures; and translate into a workable as-built floor plan using computer-aided software (autoCAD) as needed.
Produce design development drawings using computer-aided software (autoCAD).
Select furniture, finishes, and equipment using Chartwell FF&E standards.
Produce sketches, drawings, and material finish boards.
Develop drawings and documentation for tender or quote, including finish tables and specifications.
Review and negotiate contracts, proposals, quotes, and fees of consultants and contractors including architects, engineers, vendors, general contractors, and construction managers.
Advise Stakeholders on the progress of projects through regular site meetings, calls and written communication.
Work with multiple Stakeholders and operational teams to ensure logistical coordination of work in fully occupied spaces.
Supervise the work as it is carried out by trades, ensuring quality control, budget, and adherence to scope.
Qualifications
Education:
University Degree in interior design, architecture, or equivalent. College or associate degrees may be considered depending on experience.
Experience:
10+ years of experience in the field of Interior Design. NCIDQ is an asset, but not required.
Skills & Abilities:
Proficient in MS Office, with thorough working knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook
Ability to interpret construction documentation and drawings (floor plans, elevations, sections, details)
Ability to work proficiently in autoCAD to produce working, conceptual and construction drawings. 3-D modelling and rendering is an asset.
Knowledge of local regulations and building codes associated with designing residential, hospitality or institutional spaces. Evidence-based design or experience in designing for the elderly is an asset.
An eye for design; including colour theory, space planning, scale and proportion, trends, and good 3D awareness.
The ability to visualize concepts and explain them to others.
Good project management and organizational skills
Awareness of and the ability to technically interpret the range of relevant products and materials.
Strong sense of diplomacy, communication, and negotiation skills.
Confidence with complex design situations, fast-paced working environments, and decision making.
Self-discipline and good time management skills.
Must have hard hat and safety boots.
Effort
Work requires a high degree of mental effort to analyze situations, verify and communicate information, work under tight timelines, and work with a computer.
Physical effort will be in the form of keyboarding, driving several hours to site (property), or walking during facility visits and inspections.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment, at on-site facility visits, and construction projects, including frequent travel to Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
Valid driver's license and a personal motor vehicle available for transportation to sites.
Walking moderate distances and standing for several hours while at/on site may be required.
Use of PPE (boots, hard hat, vests, masks, etc.) may be required while on construction site.
