Job Description


Position Summary

The Senior Instructional Designer role at Seneca Polytechnic requires a deep understanding of learning theories, educational technologies, and best practices in online learning. In this position, you will collaborate closely with faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) to design curriculum and develop engaging content. Providing senior-level direction you will support a team of specialists, and you oversee the production of learning activities and assessments for all modalities. Proficiency in various online learning platforms, including LMS (Blackboard Ultra), H5P, Articulate Storyline, web-based, and extended reality, is essential to succeed in this role. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting the communication platforms and strategies of The Teaching & Learning Centre (T&LC) and Program Quality (PQ) website.

Responsibilities

Development of Curriculum

  • Guide and collaborate with Faculty, SME, consultants, and members of the design team to articulate the instructional objectives, the assessment strategy and overall design strategy to engage students in meaningful learning.
  • Coordinate and assist with the planning and managing of curriculum development projects through various channels of learning such as face-to-face, hybrid, fully online and Hyflex.
  • Design, develop, and support the creation of dynamic learning content.
  • Integrates priority areas such as Equity Diversity Inclusion, Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Sustainability and essential soft skills into curriculum design and development.
  • Lead development courses that are compliant with Seneca\xe2\x80\x99s Quality Framework and Standards of Practice for Faculty, Universal Design for Learning, best practices in instructional design, copyright, and intellectual property, and AODA standards.
Design Practices & Technology Integration
  • Use a variety of software applications to design and create interactive and customized animation.
  • Design \xe2\x80\x9creal life\xe2\x80\x9d simulations, graphics, artwork and visual representations of learning tasks, audio-visual media for online instruction, web pages and other eLearning materials as required.
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients (internal and external to Seneca) and curriculum development professionals.
  • Ensure timely completion of course design and development projects by meeting deliverable deadlines and adhering to resource allocation budgets.
  • Support the integration of mobile learning applications.
Leadership and Support
  • Design and host relevant training and workshops for faculty related to teaching and learning.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to members of the design team.
  • Support specialized projects in the effective use of educational technologies in eLearning.
  • Use data gathered from student feedback, learning analytics, and other sources to identify and act on opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain and update policies and processes as well as participate in joint sessions offered by various departments throughout Seneca. (E.g., New faculty orientation, Micro-teaching, program review workshops, etc.)
Qualifications

Education
  • Minimum of a four (4) year Degree in Educational Technology, Curriculum and/or Instructional Design, Education, or Adult Teaching is required.
  • Certification in the following areas is an asset: Instructional Design, Project Management, LMS, Multimedia, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Articulate Storyline
Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of practical experience in instructional design, online course development, and learning management systems.
  • Experience using Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard Ultra), Multimedia software applications (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud) and Rapid eLearning software (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Captivate, HP5) or Web Programming (HTML5, ActionScript etc.) is required.
  • Experience teaching in a post-secondary environment is preferred.
  • Previous facilitation experience is an asset.
Skills
  • Exceptional leadership abilities and expertise in building strong relationships.
  • Ability to deliver compelling and impactful presentations.
  • In-depth comprehension of pedagogy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent knowledge of the technology required to enable effective online, leader-led, virtual, and mobile learning experiences.
  • Extensive administrative use and support of learning management systems.
  • Creating and facilitating professional development opportunities related to teaching and learning best practices for faculty, staff, or students.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including managing multiple projects and deadlines with competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently to solve problems and as a team creatively and effectively.

A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered as equivalent to the above requirements in the event that there are no internal applicants that meet the qualifications as posted. Equivalency will be assessed by the talent acquisition team.
