This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
The successful candidate will be offered an appointment, which is in accordance with the Faculty Service Officer Agreement. This position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $80,635 to $112,111.
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is seeking a highly skilled Senior Imaging Scientist and Director to lead the Cell Imaging Core. This individual will be a key expert in light and electron microscopy, overseeing all operations and research within the facility.
Reporting to the Department Chair of Cell Biology and accountable to the Vice Dean of Research, this role is crucial for driving research innovation and providing essential teaching and service to the department. The Director will manage an annual budget of more than $400,000, supervise a team of three technologists, and play a vital role in supporting over 200 users from more than 100 research groups annually. The ability to collaborate with and train a diverse range of users, from undergraduate students to experienced Principal Investigators, is essential.
Responsibilities:

• Lead research grant writing to secure funding for new equipment, infrastructure upgrades, and technology development.
• Collaborate with researchers to design new experiments, develop novel assays, and provide expert consultation on instrument selection and usage.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, design training modules, and develop educational content for microscopy techniques.
• Oversee the management and administration of the Cell Imaging Core, including budget decisions, policy implementation, and user facility management software.
• Ensure the facility is compliant with all biosafety regulations and health and safety protocols.
• Supervise, train, and conduct performance reviews for technical staff.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for the Cell Imaging Core, providing tours and promoting the facility to internal and external groups.
• Stay current with emerging technologies, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, by attending conferences and conducting literature searches.

Qualifications:
Minimum

• Graduate degree in cell biology or a related field; a Ph.D. is preferred.
• Excellent working knowledge of various imaging techniques, including laser scanning confocal, TIRFM, spinning disc confocal, live-cell imaging, and super-resolution microscopy.
• Expertise in both commercial and open-source image acquisition software.
• Demonstrated experience in sample preparation and image acquisition using both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
• Experience in teaching and developing course materials.
• Strong communication and management skills.
• Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Experience with grant writing.

Preferred

• Experience in facility management.
• Knowledge of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and coding.
• Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, and network administration.
• Familiarity with facility management software (e.g., PPMS-Stratocore).
• Experience collaborating with a diverse range of academic and industry groups.
