Your Position & How You Will Contribute:


The Sr. GIS Planner will report to the VP of Design and Construction and play a pivotal role in supporting telMAX's network planning and deployment through the strategic use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This role is responsible for leading the development of high-level design plans for new market builds, overseeing the management and integrity of spatial data, conducting geographic analyses, and delivering maps and reports that inform the design, optimization, and expansion of our telecommunications network. The ideal candidate will bring proven expertise in GIS and will also be mentoring GIS analysts and promoting best practices across the organization. A strong background in telecommunications and demonstrated leadership in guiding cross-functional teams. Responsibilities & Key Duties include:



Management and Leadership

Provide guidance and technical expertise to GIS team members when needed, acting as a subject matter expert. Contribute to the planning and execution of GIS projects, ensuring deliverables are met on time. Follow and promote GIS standards and best practices to ensure data quality and security. Collaborate with cross-departmental teams to integrate GIS solutions into business workflows.

Technical & OperationalOversee the design, development, and maintenance of GIS databases, applications, and tools. Ensure the accuracy, accessibility, and integrity of spatial data. Manage GIS software, servers, and enterprise systems (e.g., ArcGIS Enterprise, QGIS, PostGIS). Implement quality control procedures for data collection, storage, and analysis. Provide advanced mapping, geospatial analysis, and data visualization to support decision-making. Coordinate system integrations with enterprise IT systems (e.g., asset management, ERP, CRM). Manage and update as-built documentation, ensuring that all spatial data reflects actual construction and installation conditions for provisioning purposes.

Network Planning & Design:Create high-level design plans for future market builds and design network infrastructure projects to support expansion initiatives. Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to support the design and deployment of telecommunications infrastructure. Conduct spatial analysis to identify optimal routes for network expansion and infrastructure placement. Integrate and manage Vetro systems, focusing on fiber network design, mapping, and as-built records.

Strategic & Stakeholder EngagementWork with leadership to identify business needs and implement GIS solutions. Communicate GIS capabilities, findings, and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders. Manage relationships with vendors, consultants, and external agencies. Stay current with emerging GIS technologies and trends to recommend improvements.

Map Production & Visualization:Generate high-quality maps, visualizations, and reports that effectively communicate network plans and strategies to internal and external stakeholders. Produce detailed site maps, network diagrams, and as-built documentation for project planning and execution. Assist in creating presentations and visual materials to support business development and project proposals.

Manage ON1CallManage telMAX/ON1Call software for in-house clears Build and maintain a relationship with ON1Call. Maintain accurate records of locate tickets, drawings, and clearances. Track the status of active locate tickets and follow up with utility providers as required. Reallocate tickets that require on-site check by CCS. Monitor locate expiry dates and request renewals as necessary. Troubleshoot issues related to delayed or disputed locates. Assist with audits, reporting, and continuous improvement of locate management processes.


Education & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Engineering, Geography, Geospatial Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's preferred). 5+ years of progressive GIS experience, including work in senior or advanced technical roles. Proven experience with GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, QGIS) or equivalent platforms. Experience with spatial databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Oracle Spatial). Knowledge of scripting and programming languages (Python, SQL, JavaScript).


Skills & CompetenciesExtensive experience with spatial databases, including SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Python, and Oracle Spatial. Proficient in GIS software platforms such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and QGIS. Knowledgeable in scripting and programming languages, specifically Python, SQL, and JavaScript. Skilled in utilizing frameworks and technologies including React, Next.js, Flask, Sanity.js, and WordPress. Strong background in cloud and developer tools such as Git, Jira, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS (EC2, Lambda), Docker, Vercel, and Azure ML. Demonstrated ability to integrate software engineering and automation techniques within GIS workflows to enhance efficiency and data accuracy. Advanced problem-solving, data visualization, and analytical capabilities, with proven experience in creating dashboards and user interfaces. Skilled in frameworks and technologies such as React, Next.js, Flask, Sanity.js, and WordPress. Strong background in cloud and developer tools, including Git, Jira, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS (EC2, Lambda), Docker, Vercel, and Azure ML. Ability to apply software engineering and automation techniques to GIS workflows, improving efficiency and data accuracy.
