Ultra Maritime has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate or Senior FPGA and Firmware Developer to contribute to our rapidly expanding business. The candidate will be responsible for designing, coding, simulating, implementing, testing and integrating firmware and digital logic realized in FPGA devices and microcontrollers. The role would suit a candidate with a keen interest in embedded systems and a proven ability to develop digital components as part of a wider complex product.

Nationality Requirements

Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.



The Intermediate or Senior Firmware Developer is responsible for designing, coding, simulating, implementing, testing, and integrating firmware components within custom-engineered systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Digital firmware design utilizing HDL

FPGA functional simulation verification

Embedded Firmware implementation and unit testing

Firmware integration, verification, and defect resolution

Contributing to design, test, maintenance, and release documentation

Support the Software and System testing groups as required to conduct software and system integration testing

Required Skills/Experience (Intermediate Developer):

Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering

4+ years of digital logic development experience

Self-motivated, adaptable to change, proactive, diligent, and inter-personal skills

Knowledge of digital logic best practices, methodologies, processes, and tools, specifically for FPGA and Embedded firmware development

Working experience with test instruments like Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer etc.

Required Skills/Experience (Senior Developer):

7+ years of digital logic development experience

As above for an Intermediate developer

Experience providing mentorship and technical oversight of more junior team members

Desired Skills

Ability to read electronics schematics, device specifications, datasheets etc.

Test automation experience with scripting languages similar to Python, or LabVIEW experience

Understanding of sensor calibration and verification methodologies

Experience working on customized hardware solutions for defense organizations (any level)

Good understanding of configuration and build management

A good working understanding of Microsoft office applications: Word and Excel

Familiarity with using Linux operating system and shell.

Printed Circuit Board design, development, and testing

Sonar domain knowledge or similar signal processing intensive applications

Experience working with hardware and software emulators to conduct integration testing

Additional Requirements

The Candidate must be capable of acquiring a Canadian / NATO Secret security clearance and a Canadian Controlled Goods assessment to the satisfaction of the company
