Our client, is a professional engineering firm in Toronto that specializes in fire protection engineering and building code consulting, they are the largest engineering firm in Canada that specializes exclusively in these services.

THE ROLE
The Fire Alarm System Design Engineer provides consulting services for private and public sector projects.

The individual will undertake retrofit and design projects including site reviews and assessing the fire alarm system in a building. The candidate should understand current fire alarm system technology and will have experience with fire alarm installations in large complexes (i.e., multiple towers, interconnected and/or multi-use buildings), and be familiar with the staged installation of system replacements to ensure the continued operation during the construction phase. The position will involve the application of all Canadian provincial and national building and fire codes, CAN/ULC, NFPA standards, and best practice guidelines related to the design and installation of fire alarm systems.

  • Attend construction and pre-construction site meetings
  • Review and approve shop drawing, close out the document, attend witness testing of the completed installation to confirm compliance with the tender document, codes and standards
  • Apply fundamental fire protection principles to support investigation, design, and construction projects
  • Assess performance of existing fire alarm systems, selecting proper and cost-effective solutions for replacement using applicable Codes and standards
  • Support internal and external clients by advising on application of Codes and standards.
WHAT'S REQUIRED
  • Licensed Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years of work experience in a role designing new fire alarm systems and retrofitting existing fire alarm systems in compliance with the Canadian Building and Fire Codes as well as relevant ULC and NFPA standards.
  • Excellent knowledge of ULC 524, 536, and 537 is a must, as well as familiarity with the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA standards, Canadian Electrical Code and best practices
  • Knowledge of addressable and distributed fire alarm system design, and requirements for data communication links; be familiar with specialty detectors i.e., air aspiration detectors, linear heat detection cable, flame/gas detectors, and fire detectors in atrium locations
  • Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written) including report writing, alternative solution preparation, and strong presentation skills; able to tactically communicate with various levels of stakeholders (client, contractor, service provide, AHJ, engineers etc.)
  • Able to obtain government security clearance.
  • Technically oriented; Self-starter, good analytical and organizational skills; attention to detail;
  • Ability to work well independently and to interact with other industry professionals, associated trades, and industry authorities, project team members and clients
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset.
