Senior Field Adjuster, Claims - New Minas, Nova Scotia

The Senior Field Adjuster, Claims, is responsible for the in-person investigation and management of multi-line claims across Property, Accident Benefits (AB), and Casualty. This role serves as a key field representative of Heartland Mutual Insurance, conducting on-site inspections, gathering detailed evidence, and managing moderate to complex claims that require field attendance. While this role supports Property claims, it is distinct from the Senior Field Adjuster, Property Claims, which focuses exclusively on the most complex property losses. The incumbent will be relied upon for their technical expertise, customer service, and ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners including brokers, vendors, and legal counsel.

What you'll do...

Field Investigation and Claims Handling:

Attend loss locations to assess damage and collect relevant documentation for Property, AB, and Casualty claims. Conduct interviews, gather statements, take photos, inspect damage, and perform scene investigations. Determine coverage, assess liability, and recommend or negotiate settlements within authority limits.

Multi-Line File Management:

Manage a diverse caseload including property damage, bodily injury, and liability claims requiring field presence. Set and adjust reserves accurately based on investigation and exposure. Maintain detailed documentation and file notes in alignment with internal standards and regulatory requirements.

Customer and Broker Communication:

Act as a key point of contact for policyholders, brokers, and Agents in field-attended claims. Provide timely updates, clear explanations of policy coverage, and guidance through the claims process. Deliver a superior claims experience by being responsive, professional, and empathetic during in-person interactions.

Collaboration and Escalation Support:

Work closely with internal adjusters, appraisers, and Senior Specialists across business lines to coordinate claim handling strategies. Support complex or sensitive files by providing field-based insights to Claims Managers and senior leadership. Liaise with independent adjusters, engineers, restoration contractors, medical assessors, and legal counsel as required.

CAT Response and Readiness:

Participate in catastrophe (CAT) response operations as a field resource. Conduct rapid damage assessments and contribute to effective CAT reporting and triage.

Compliance and Continuous Improvement:

Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, privacy laws, and internal quality standards. Identify recurring field issues and recommend process or service improvements based on front-line experience.

What you'll bring...

Education & Experience:

Minimum 5-7 years of adjusting experience, preferably in multi-line claims with a focus on property and casualty. Experience in field adjusting or investigative roles required. Post-secondary education in Insurance, Business, or a related field; CIP designation strongly preferred.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

Strong understanding of property construction, liability principles, accident benefits, and repair estimation. Proficient in use of claims software and field tools, including estimating platforms (e.g., Xactimate).

Competencies:

Excellent investigative, analytical, and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication abilities. High level of professionalism, discretion, and emotional intelligence when dealing with customers and claimants. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and travel frequently within assigned territory.

If you have the qualifications we are seeking and would thrive in a work environment where you are valued and respected, please apply on the company website. Accommodation is available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.

What's in it for You:

Join a Supportive Team: Be part of a collaborative and high-performing team that values knowledge sharing and celebrating wins together. Comprehensive Total Rewards: Enjoy a competitive compensation package, including health and wellness benefits, pension plan, paid time off, and more. Career Growth & Development: Take advantage of continuous learning opportunities and stretch assignments. Make an Impact: Play a key role in helping customers navigate challenging situations with empathy and expertise.
