THE ROLE: We\xe2\x80\x99re expanding our External Affairs team and have an opportunity for a Sr. External Affairs Advisor, located in Calgary, AB. Reporting to the Director, External Affairs & Policy this role will be responsible for understanding and providing feedback in regard to government and regulatory policy, with input for the development and implementation of an advocacy framework to support our developing strategic direction. The candidate will work closely with and support Senior Management and the Regulatory Affairs Advisors who currently participate in external industry working committees. This role will also require the establishment of key relationships with external parties involved in influencing or setting policy such as regulatory bodies, industry groups, trade organizations and government representatives when and as required.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Understand key business and operational requirements that may be affected by government or regulatory policy, e.g. electricity, climate, environment
  • Identify emerging and ongoing issues in the external landscape, and develop integrated policy strategies and solutions to support the leadership team
  • Represent the company at key government and regulator meetings to effectively represent the company\xe2\x80\x99s interest, provide thoughtful feedback on policy initiatives and develop key working relationships that align with operations objectives
  • Keep the leadership team and the head office apprised of critical regulatory and political issues through the development of regular reporting tools and positions papers
  • Coordinate representation on external working committees to ensure alignment on key initiatives, and provide strategic direction to PETRONAS Canada representatives
  • Participate and advise in strategies that enhance PETRONAS Canada\xe2\x80\x99s reputation with key stakeholders
  • Lead and facilitate internal department collaboration on the alignment of policy and advocacy initiatives with our corporate activities and strategy
  • Collaborate with internal departments to develop corporate sustainability tools
  • Participate in the execution of the External Affairs Strategy and plans to manage the company\xe2\x80\x99s risk, build its profile and develop its reputation as a strategic policy contributor with industry, the regulator and governments
WHAT YOU BRING:
  • University degree from a related program required
  • 10 - 15 years progressive experience in government/policy engagement roles with a focus in BC
  • Demonstrated experience working with external stakeholders with a reputation for fostering and maintaining positive external relationships
  • Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate directly and respectfully, while fostering an internal and external environment of collaboration
  • Strong written communication skills including building power point presentations for internal and external audiences and internal briefing notes
  • Strong project-management skills, with an ability to multi-task and remain flexible when priorities change
