A successful candidate is an effective team player, creative problem solver, strong communicator and has an excellent grasp of power system operations and electricity markets fundamentals.

Job Overview:

The Senior Engineering Technologist has the following key responsibilities:

  • Analyze statistical, mathematical and engineering data to assist professional staff carrying out studies relative to power system operation and reliability.
  • Write, modify, implement, test and debug computer programs and associated data to facilitate the monitoring of security limits in the EMS.
  • Design programs based on standard programming models to provide mathematical solutions to engineering problems. Prepare detailed flow charts and design logic and subroutines within the program.
  • Maintain computer programs and associated data in operating and production condition.
  • Plan and carry out tests to detect and isolate problems and discuss findings with responsible personnel. Contact users and others involved to discuss and agree on remedial measures. Correct or modify coding and update documentation, listings and operating procedures.
  • Determine system fault currents under short-circuit conditions through use of commercial power system analysis tools. Obtain all line, machine and transformer data necessary for internal and external systems to establish the short circuit base cases.
  • Prepare load flow base cases for operating and planning studies, outage assessment studies and contingency analysis. Collect, analyze and prepare all data required for the development of loads, generation patterns and system configuration changes essential for the creation of base case load flows.
  • Design and create single line diagrams for the required study areas.
  • Maintain and manage technical databases. Collect data necessary to maintain and update databases used in the operation of the power system; such as, lines, transformers, generator, exciter, circuit breaker, capacitor, loads, relay settings and flowgates.
  • Document and assist in the coordination of planned outages in the short term. Maintain and update data files relative to the present and future status of the power system.
  • Using commercial CAD application, create ICG single line diagrams for Control Room and other users as requested. Print the requested size drawings and distribute to users.
  • Maintain the EMS save cases directory space. Delete old snap shots as required to maintain adequate space to facilitate user studies. Convert any TLR save cases into PSS/E raw files for TLR investigation purposes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Receive assignment from the Senior Power System Engineer, Engineering Manager, and/or Senior Manager in detail on specific problems related to assigned areas of work.

Who You Are

Education:
  • Requires knowledge of power system networks, control and feedback systems, electrical and electronic theories, advanced mathematics and engineering principles to analyze statistical, mathematical and engineering data in assisting professional staff to carry out studies relative to power system operation and reliability.
  • Requires knowledge of computer techniques to write and modify programs and utilize computer facilities.
  • Requires knowledge of technical writing for the preparation of clear, concise reports.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of Grade 12 in a Secondary School, Commercial or Technical School plus a three-year course of concentrated study in the appropriate subjects obtained in the Province of Ontario from a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College or by having the equivalent level of education.
Experience:
  • Requires experience which demonstrates the capability to become familiar with present and planned power system configuration, interrelationships and interdependence between various locations functions and personnel, methods, practices, computer programs and facilities available for carrying out the work and similar detail associated with the position.
  • Requires experience which demonstrates the capability to become familiar with IESO organization, standards and procedures.
  • A period of up to six years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
