What you'll do
The Distribution Standards team serves British Columbia from our office in Burnaby (Edmonds). This diverse and dedicated
team of engineering professionals creates construction standards and specifies and approves equipment for use on the BC
Hydro Distribution System. Distribution Standards is also heavily involved in supporting Operations through failure
investigations, as well as providing engineering subject matter expertise for internal and external engineers and designers
to ensure the distribution system is operated, maintained, repaired, upgraded/ replaced, and expanded with a Safety by
Design mindset.
In this position, you will specialize in distribution control gear, sensors, communications, and apply the technical details of
distribution equipment and systems to write specifications, approve equipment for use, and write design and construction
standards. The standards you will write are the building blocks for constructing a safe, reliable and sustainable distribution
system at optimum life cycle cost.
Working in a team environment, you will liaise with vendors and other departments in order to integrate new equipment into
the system, troubleshoot field equipment issues, and develop and support the construction, design, and commissioning
standards for new equipment. When equipment fails, you will lead an investigation into the failure and provide
recommendations to limit future failures. As a subject matter expert on distribution equipment, you will build relationships
with and support groups across BC Hydro including Field Operations, Engineering, Design, Safety, Procurement, Asset
Investment Management, and Grid Operations.
The position includes, but is not limited to, the following capabilities and duties:
Develop BC Hydro construction and design standards for the BC Hydro Distribution System
Plan and execute field trials, evaluate new equipment, and work with field crews and vendors to approve equipment for
use on the distribution system.
Provide technical subject matter expert support to Distribution Engineering and Distribution Design
Investigate, analyze, and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are challenging and unusual in nature.
Work closely with stakeholders to reach consensus and drive innovation, finding engineering solutions that add value,
address employee and public safety, protect the environment, balance competing interests, and address full life cycle cost.
Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues and clients to determine
relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
Work independently, under general direction, with work assigned in terms of broadly defined objectives and budget
limitations. Advice of manager may be sought in critical areas or as high-profile work that would impact the work of others.
Developing subject matter expertise for new equipment introduced to the BC Hydro system.
Representing BC Hydro on committees, research consortiums, and peer utility forums.
Collaborating with business groups in developing equipment needs and equipment strategies.
Providing subject matter expertise for resolution of location specific investigations.
What you bring
Have a degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized/accredited university. Engineering degrees in other disciplines
may be considered if the candidate has the required level of applicable experience for this position. Be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
(EGBC).
Have a minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience in utility distribution engineering or an equivalent industry.
Demonstrate technical knowledge in both overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at
voltages up to and including 35kV.
Possesses good verbal and written communications skills to adequately articulate and discuss technical options, present
proposed solutions to a wide range of audiences, and the ability to adapt to the different understanding levels of the
audience.
Technical knowledge of utility distribution systems and equipment including electrical and operating requirements.
Distribution Automation equipment experience (in SCADA communication systems and system operations), and distributed
energy resources will be considered as an asset.
The ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a challenging and
unusual nature.
The ability to manage relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that
add value, and address competing interests at least life cycle cost.
The ability to manage the successful delivery and implementation of projects through strong project management skills
and a customer service attitude.
A demonstrated ability to lead through influence with proven facilitation and negotiation skills is an asset.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).
Able to work effectively within a team, yet self-motivated to drive tasks to successful completion.
Demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and inter-personal skills.
Demonstrate organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Apply practical knowledge and sound judgment in the analysis and resolution of problems.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered for a lower level role (Intermediate Engineer 1 & 2 (P1 & P2).
