We are looking for self-motivated, technical Senior Engineer, to join us in the exciting work we do in ATCO Electricity.

Reporting to the Design Technical Support and Standards team, this position is responsible for engineering and authentication of overhead and underground distribution design standards, materials specifications as well as forensic engineering of failed equipment and hardware. This area of responsibility will require in depth knowledge in CSA, as well as the AEUC codes and standards for distribution power systems.

The position will be a technical authority overseeing technically challenging issues and complex analysis. The position will be working closely with vendors and suppliers staying abreast of the latest technologies, developing maintenance practices and standards for new and existing equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Create, update, review and publish Distribution Construction Standards Manual (DCSM) construction drawings, take professional responsibility for the accuracy and code compliance off all improvements and changes.
  • Provide engineering support to numerous groups across our organization including Distribution Design Engineers, Power Line Technicians (PLTs), Construction Leads as well as Work Methods, Asset Management, and our Field Technical Services teams.
  • Initiate process improvements, changes to standards or recommendations as required.
  • Review and approve vendor material and equipment drawings to ensure they meet ATCO\'s material specs. Update our material and equipment specs as changes are required. Review manufacturer documents, test reports, inspections and test plans, practices and procedures including factory test inspections.
  • Assessing and comparing new apparatus, materials and hardware from a performance and operational perspective. Documenting recommendations including project drivers, benefits, life cycle costs and measurements of success. Proposing, managing, reviewing, and evaluating field trial performance.
  • Research new technology and product developments to enhance engineering and construction standards. Network with external vendors and bring forward new products that show potential to reduce inventory, labour, or material costs.
  • Proven design support of overhead and underground distribution facilities including application of company standards, calculations of structure loadings, determining poles classes and clearance calculations through software such as PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole.
  • Solid understanding of apparatus failures and condition assessments, identifying prudent remedial and preventative measures.
  • Collaborate with Industry counterparts about developments and challenges in Apparatus area to continually review and improve our design and maintenance practices.
  • Investigating maintenance requirements for new and existing apparatus, based on manufacturer recommendations and performance-based reliability. Support ATCO\'s Asset Management team as they develop Distribution Maintenance standards and guidelines.
  • Interpreting Dissolved Gas Analysis results and recommending remedial actions, baselining, and archiving results.
  • Authentication of one\'s own and other team member\'s work.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University.
  • Professional Engineer registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive responsibility in engineering, electrical design, Canadian Electrical Code standards and construction projects preferably within an electrical utility environment.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills with excellent report writing communication & presentation skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Independently research, learn and stay current on rapidly changing technologies and products.
  • Ability to arrive at pragmatic solutions to technical issues that represent the best engineered solution from the perspective of cost, schedule, and scope.
  • Previous experience with Power Line Systems (PLS), Neara, Auto-CAD, MicroStation or Autodesk Inventor software is an asset.
  • A valid Alberta driver\'s license (Class 5).
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered as Engineer, Design Technical Support and Standards.
