The Opportunity:Company, Department: Emera Newfoundland & Labrador, EngineeringLocation: Primary Position location Halifax, Nova Scotia OR St Johns, Newfoundland & LabradorClosing Date: March 4, 2025Emera Newfoundland & Labrador (ENL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. (EMA- TXS), is responsible for operating and maintaining the 500-megawatt HVdc Maritime Link Project. The Maritime Link transmits energy between the island of Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. With office locations in both provinces, ENL is committed to ensuring that the Maritime Link transmits clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotia. The Maritime Link primarily consists of two switchyards, two HVdc converter stations and adjoining substations, 400km of overhead transmission lines, two transition compounds, two grounding sites and two 170km submarine cables.ENLs greatest source of energy is our people. Were hiring solution-minded people excited to help us grow into the future.We are currently looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering, you will be a key member of the Operations team, ensuring safety, environmental, operations, maintenance, and business objectives are met.Key elements of this role include:

  • Partner with other ENL engineers and be accountable to support multi-discipline engineering functions;
  • Support the ENL site Operations team in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador by assisting in process and equipment troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and in developing initiatives to improve reliability;
  • Manage operational and capital projects from concept development through budgeting and the approval process and onto completion - safely, on time and on budget;
  • Participate in shutdown planning and other planning functions as required;
  • Collaborate with the System Operators in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador;
  • Actively participate in ENLs Permit to Work (P2W) process;
  • Provide engineering assistance in support of safety improvements, process improvements, equipment modifications, and cost reduction initiatives;
  • Take responsibility for developing, maintaining and improving existing operational and engineering processes;
  • Keep abreast of industry knowledge and advancements in electrical engineering and other relevant technical fields; apply new technologies where relevant;
  • Supervise external consultants and contractors;
  • Document, assess and manage risks and mitigation plans.
You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environment management system processes and initiatives.What skills will make you successful?As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and are a full member (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia, and/or The Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience. Experience in electric utility operations, HVdc facilities, and/or Control and Protection are definite assets.
  • Previous project management experience.
  • Experience in maintenance shutdown planning will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of cyber security, particularly NERC CIP compliance, is considered an asset.
  • You must have strong oral and written communication skills, exemplary interpersonal skills and be able to function effectively in a team environment.
  • You will be a self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills with established skills in managing multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
  • You will be required to travel between Maritime Link facilities and offices as required; with travel nominally to one site per month;
  • You are required to be available for after-hours consultation (via phone/remote access) and responding to reliability or other events that may occasionally arise.
  • You must hold a valid drivers license.
