The role:

We have an exciting opportunity for either a Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer with interest and capability to advance to a Team Lead position over time, or an experienced Electrical & Controls Team Leader to join our multi-disciplinary team. Prior water industry experience is not required, however deep technical understanding of Electrical Engineering, Controls & Automation Engineering, and effective leadership skills are important.

Your main tasks will include:

Electrical:

  • Preparing the electrical engineering design basis and assisting in conceptual design of plant wide electrical systems and electrical layout.
  • Generating electrical design drawings and other documentation including single line diagrams, electrical schematics, panel layouts, load lists, cable schedules, and other related documentation.
  • Performing calculations for short circuit current ratings, nominal and peak loads, overcurrent protection devices, cable sizes, and voltage drop.
  • Generating detailed design of 480/600V AC electrical power panels for industrial applications as well as 24V DC industrial PLC control panels.
  • Preparing detailed specifications for the following components and systems: electrical enclosures, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), disconnects, circuit breakers, distribution blocks, transformers, cable trays and cables, motor contactors, and other miscellaneous components of the electrical system.
  • Working with the in-house production team to ensure work packages, installation instructions, and required parts are in place ahead of the build schedule.
Controls & Automation:
  • Preparing the overall automation system design basis, determining I/O requirements, selecting PLC and HMI hardware, and creating a plant wide control system network architecture.
  • Generating controls and automation system design documents including State Flow Diagrams, Sequence Charts, Control Narratives, Shutdown Keys, Testing Documents, I/O Lists, and other related documentation.
  • Preparing detailed specifications for automation system hardware including PLC, HMI, I/O cards, network equipment, and other components of the automation system.
  • Delivering complete controls and automation packages of complex water treatment process plants that include I/O mapping, PLC code, HMI screens, alarms, data logging, hardware configuration, network configuration, and other miscellaneous task required to deliver a complete automation system.
  • Setting up operator friendly simulations of the controls and automation system and facilitating thorough simulation testing.
  • Supporting commissioning and troubleshooting of controls and automation systems.
  • Interfacing with third party vendor sub-systems using common industrial communication protocols including Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and Peer-to-Peer Messaging.
  • Working closely with Process-Control Engineers to ensure Control Narrative accuracy and working towards eliminating gaps between Process and Controls.
Team Management:
  • Working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with Process Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Project Engineers to ensure all stakeholders are aligned on all aspects of the electrical design and automation system design.
  • Working closely with junior Engineers and Technologists to ensure accurate completion of engineering deliverables that meet project requirements and internal standards.
  • Managing assigned scope of engineering work related to electrical systems and controls and automation for projects of varying sizes.
  • Maintaining complete project documentation.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support the project.
  • Supporting our in-house Production team with the installation and testing of panels and equipment.
  • Occasionally supporting hands-on commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • Occasionally traveling to plant installations in customer-facing environments for start-up and commissioning.
You will be a great fit if you have:
  • An interest in taking on a leadership position and gradually assuming a managerial role.
  • A degree in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer with EGBC.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Minimum 7 years experience with industrial control panels, low voltage electrical systems, and implementing controls and automation systems.
  • Knowledge of Canadian or US Electrical Codes and its application.
  • Solid electrical engineering foundation paired with excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with developing high-quality electrical schematics using AutoCAD.
  • Experience with programming in Ladder and STL languages and programming PLCs and HMIs with Siemens STEP 7, Siemens WinCC, and Allen Bradley Studio 5000.
  • Experience with identifying and troubleshooting controls and automation system bugs under time pressure.
  • Experience in coordinating with production/assembly and creating build work packages.
  • Experience with collaborating in multidisciplinary teams where multiple stakeholders are involved.
  • Knowledge of specifying instruments, sensors, and control valves for industrial water treatment applications.
