As the Senior Director, Research & Engineering - Advanced Concepts, you drive the vision and lead a highly technical interdisciplinary group of forward-thinking researchers, developers and experts to deliver tangible solutions for the mountain athlete everywhere. With support from your team, you drive the research strategy and hold the scientific point-of-view across all product categories. You ensure innovations and solutions are grounded in world class competencies in applied research, digital excellence, advanced manufacturing and performance validation (lab & field). You are a business leader with a passion for delivering industry-shaping solutions to establish and maintain Arc\'teryx\' position as a disruptive, bold and relevant design brand.

This role is based out of our North Vancouver office and is open to hybrid remote work.

The Advanced Concepts team drives breakthrough innovation in snow, trail and climb for the mountain athlete everywhere. If you were the Senior Director, Research & Engineering, Advanced Concepts now, here are some of the core activities you would be doing:

  • Building and driving the research and engineering point-of-view and strategy across the innovation portfolio
  • Developing and leaving vision and long-term goals for how Research & Engineering will deliver within and beyond the Advanced Concepts innovation portfolio
  • Leveraging your deep technical experience, industry excellence and personal ingenuity to develop new and innovative solutions for the mountain athlete everywhere
  • Managing a portfolio of complex short, mid and long-term projects across categories and clearly communicating updates to key stakeholders.
  • Ensuring your team can executive effectively by clearly defining and aligning on the right scope, brief, budget and deliverables, and mobilizing the right team to achieve the required level of quality
  • Holding the highest standard for defining \'state of the art\', leading research, building insight, generating unique perspective, creating prototypes and performance validation approach across the innovation portfolio
  • Leading the strategic and functional direction for internal shop, performance validation and testing facilities as well as in-house manufacturing and supplier partnerships
  • Building, coaching, and guiding your diverse team of experts; inspiring them to deliver advanced R&D solutions across all product areas.
  • Building and maintaining strong cross-functional partnerships to create alignment and enrollment against concept initiatives
  • Creating strategic research and engineering partnerships with external partners, suppliers, individuals and academics to evolve and accelerate product innovation
  • Creating and maintain a robust IP portfolio, including identifying IP opportunities and liaising with legal from ideation to commercialization to ensure we are maintaining ownership of our proprietary ideas
  • Partnering with Innovation Operations on research- and engineering- specific resourcing opportunities including funding, academic and internship programs (SR&ED, IRAP, NRC, MITACS, and so forth)
  • Driving key initiatives to support the future of Arc\'teryx with a focus on product circularity
  • Ensuring you and your team maintains current industry technology, product innovation, research literature and equipment knowledge through education and hands-on experience
Are you our next Senior Director, Research & Engineering - Advanced Concepts:
  • You have a master\'s degree or PhD in Engineering or Research specializing in Biomechanics, Mechanical, Thermoregulation, Materials, Textiles or Manufacturing
  • You have 12+ of technical apparel and/or equipment experience in product innovation, research, engineering and/or performance validation
  • You have 7+ years proven management experience leading a team and business strategies related to research & engineering
  • Experienced in identifying, creating and protecting a brand IP portfolio with internal and external legal teams.
  • You have exceptional communication skills, including a proven ability to communicate findings to both scientists and nonscientists with strong presentation skills.
  • You have a strong ability to build a mindset and culture of innovation within your team and beyond
  • You have experience coaching and mentoring a multi-disciplinary team of innovators
  • You have a deep understanding technical apparel and/or performance hardgoods design and/or production
  • You are proactive in identifying the root cause of issues, seeking the best (sometimes not the easiest) solutions with an unwavering commitment to do what is right
  • You remain highly flexible and adaptable when faced with ambiguity
  • You effectively balance autonomy and collaboration
  • You inspire breakthrough thinking and continuous improvement
  • Your passion for your work is paralleled by your passion for getting outside and living it
