Job Description

Senior Design Engineer

About the Company:

Garry Machine Mfg. Inc., established in 1980, is a leading manufacturer of high-quality rollers, serving the plastics, paper, and printing industries for over 20 years. Our 40,000 sq. ft. facility is equipped with five overhead cranes to streamline production. With sole ownership, we ensure each customer receives personal attention from the president and benefits from single-source responsibility. We also specialize in precision machining of small, medium, and heavy components, along with custom machinery design and manufacturing.

Garry Machine Manufacturing Inc. is a trusted provider in the design and production of high-performance machinery, specializing in creating advanced and automated solutions for the wide-format printing industry. We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join our team and lead the development of cutting-edge products that meet the highest standards of quality and innovation.

Job Summary:

The Senior Design Engineer will lead the design and development of innovative custom machinery projects, from concept to production, in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. You will create precise 3D models, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure design integrity, while your work directly impacts product quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

CAD & Design:

Design accurate 3D models in SolidWorks and PDM based on project specifications. Prepare assembly and detailed drawings, ensuring timely submission for approval and coordinating with vendors. Apply GD&T principles, sheet metal design, and tolerance stack-up considerations to ensure manufacturability. Design and simulate electrical and pneumatic schematics, configure assembly layouts, and apply DFMEA to identify and mitigate risks. Regularly update CAD models, assign part numbers for purchased components, and compile comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs) prior to production.

Production Collaboration & Project Management:

Work closely with Production and other departments to finalize designs, provide assembly-level documentation for the shop floor, and assist in developing efficient assembly processes for new projects. Develop cost-effective manufacturing strategies, source competitive quotes from vendors, and manage the timely ordering of parts to support production timelines. Lead and mentor junior engineers, guiding design standards and project execution. Identify technical risks, develop problem-solving strategies, and implement mitigation plans to ensure project success. Review mechanical layouts for potential interferences, ensuring smooth integration of components within assemblies while maintaining continuity and completeness. Coordinate with CNC and production supervisors to fabricate R&D project parts, providing design support for production-related concerns. Manage the release, modification, and implementation of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) as necessary.

Compliance & Documentation:

Ensure that new product designs meet industry standards, maintain high-quality specifications, and are delivered on schedule. Prepare documentation for ISO certification, ensure compliance with industry standards, and provide input for SRED claims. Assist in Lean manufacturing initiatives and continuous improvement processes to optimize workflows. Perform any additional tasks or duties as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field. Minimum 8 years of experience in custom machinery design and manufacturing, ideally in a metal fabrication, automation, or manufacturing environment. Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (including complex assemblies and configurations) and hands-on use of SolidWorks PDM. Demonstrated ability to design for manufacturability (DFM), including experience with CNC machining, pneumatics, and electromechanical systems. Proven experience creating detailed BOMs, schematics, and assembly instructions used by shop floor teams. Familiarity with ISO 9001 standards and Engineering Change Notice (ECN) processes. Ability to independently manage full lifecycle design projects from concept through to production. Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills, including experience coordinating with production, CNC, and procurement teams. Experience applying GD&T, sheet metal design, and tolerance stack-up principles. Experience leading or mentoring junior engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

PMP or similar project management certification. Experience preparing technical documentation for SRED claims or ISO audits. Exposure to automation or robotics for manufacturing applications. Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
