Sobeys is full of exciting opportunities, and we are always looking for bright new talent to join our team! We currently have a full time opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer. This role is based out of our main office in Mississauga, ON.



As a Senior Data Engineer with Sobeys, you will:



Play a key technical lead role in designing, developing, and optimizing enterprise data solutions using Snowflake and Azure Data Services. Beyond hands-on engineering, will guide junior engineers, lead deliverables, ensure production reliability, and drive best practices across the team. Actively contribute to architectural decisions and help scale data capabilities across the organization. Lead the Data Engineering team through project deliverables, ensuring high-quality development, timely execution, and alignment with business goals. Assist and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance, solutions, and support to help them efficiently complete tasks. Own production deployments and post-deployment support, taking accountability for issues raised in production and ensuring adherence to SLAs for resolution. Drive continuous improvement, providing ideas and best practices to optimize pipelines, improve quality, and enhance team performance. Participate and contribute to design reviews, architecture discussions, and contribute to long-term data strategy. Design and build scalable Snowflake models, views, procedures, tasks, and data pipelines. Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, views, UDFs, and create/managing tasks, streams, and pipelines in Snowflake. Manage end-to-end deployment lifecycle including version control, CI/CD pipelines, production support, and troubleshooting of deployed code. Implement Snowflake Streams, Tasks, and integration patterns for ingestion and ELT processing. Optimize SQL code and ensure performance, reliability, and cost efficiency. Create, debug, and optimize Azure Data Factory pipelines and dataflows. Work with Azure Data Lake Storage, Synapse, and related Azure services as needed. Develop and maintain interactive Streamlit applications to support self-service analytics and operational insights. Utilize Snowflake Intelligence, Cortex AI, and other Snowflake AI/ML services to enhance predictive capabilities and natural language interactions. Ensure secure handling of data using RBAC, policies, masking, and governance frameworks. Collaborate with architects and business teams to ensure data solutions align with enterprise standards. Maintain documentation and ensure consistent application of design patterns and development standards.

What you have to offer:



A bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field. 5-7+ years of experience in Data Engineering, with strong hands-on experience in Snowflake and Azure Data Factory. Expert-level SQL skills with experience in writing queries, procedures, and optimizing performance. Strong knowledge of ETL/ELT frameworks and data pipeline architectures. Hands-on experience with Streamlit and exposure to Snowflake AI capabilities (Cortex, Snowflake Intelligence). Proficiency in Python and similar scripting languages. Experience leading small teams or mentoring junior developers. Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving abilities, strong communication, stakeholder collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams A strong sense of ownership, accountability, and commitment to meeting SLAs. Experience with RBAC, security policies, and data masking/tokenization is an asset.
