In addition to building customized solutions for business, we offer full service commercial banking solutions, including a wide selection of daily banking products, complementary lending services, cash management solutions, as well as insurance and investments. About the role: You will be part of the Business Banking Credit team that has responsibility for credit decisions pertaining to a $7 billion Commercial loan portfolio across all sectors of the Canadian economy. Key sectors include Land & Construction, Hospitality, Income Producing Real Estate and general industries. This position will be responsible for supporting Senior Commercial Credit Specialists Services that manage higher risk profile Member credits and non-performing loans. You will provide underwriting and develop strategies that return high risk accounts to performing status wherever possible, maximizing recovery in situations where there has been a business failure. You will enjoy a fast-paced and exciting environment with a commitment to achieving results in a highly engaged team. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with drive and determination. The person will help Members and colleagues achieve goals with a positive, can-do, attitude. Effective communication and the ability to build relationships with others is also key. A sound understanding of Financial Statements and experience in analyzing lending proposals is important, as is a willingness to learn and be adaptable. This will provide an opportunity to develop an understanding of recovery strategies and work with top tier recovery professionals. What you will do:

  • Support Senior Commercial Credit Specialists through analysis of financial data and recommend appropriate courses of action for credit related matters.
  • Understand Member and Meridian needs after discussions with the Senior Commercial Credit Specialists and be capable of independently writing an insightful credit application that presents the key aspects of the credit while highlighting key risks and mitigants. Information should be distilled with recommendations clearly articulated and supported with sound rationale. The size of transactions will range from smaller credit exposures to larger, more complex syndicated transactions where Meridian is the lead lender.
  • Become proficient using credit tools including Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s Business Banking / Commercial Loan Origination System and Moody\xe2\x80\x99s Risk Analyst for financial analysis.
  • Be proficient on the main Microsoft Office applications.
  • Support the management of internal reporting regarding Watch List accounts and loan loss provisions.
  • Assist on overall management and control of delinquency.
  • Support colleagues working in Small Business Credit Recovery, as required, based on workflow volumes.
  • Support the wider Business Credit adjudication as required, with recommendations on annual reviews and new/increased loan requests.
  • Establish personal goals and action plans to support Business Banking objectives.
  • Keep abreast of changes within diverse industry sectors and proactively identify opportunities to improve the risk profile within Meridian\xe2\x80\x99s Business Banking portfolio.
  • Identify inefficiencies in processes and suggest improvements to address.
  • Foster a culture of proactive risk management with all business partners.
What you will bring:
  • Drive and determination to get the job done with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Business Credit underwriting and risk management in a financial services environment, combined with relevant post-secondary education with an emphasis on business and finance.
  • Strong understanding of commercial business structures. Familiarity with acceptable financing options and techniques.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of business financial statements, business case, cash flow analysis, commercial lending security documentation. Collection / work out experience and remedies would be beneficial, but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills and computer competency (word processing / spreadsheet).
  • Strong negotiation and verbal / written communication skills; must be confident in dealing with external vendors, lawyers, Members and internal/external staff.
  • Excellent credit writing skills. Demonstrates innovative and creative approaches to solving difficult challenges and seizing opportunities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment. Works well in a team environment.
  • Able to prioritize and plan workload in order to meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Self-motivated.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, and train both on/off the job to improve general business and lending skills.

Office Location: 3330 Bloor Street West, Toronto OR 75 Corporate Park Drive, St. Catharines. Meridian has a remote work policy that allows flexibility for employees to work remotely but also requires regular time in the office for purposeful meetings to collaborate, innovate and build effective relationships with your team, your colleagues and your leader which is very important to us.
