What is the opportunity?




As Senior Counsel, you will support the Global Technology & Trusts team in achieving the strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Law Group. Reporting directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Data & AI, Privacy & Cybersecurity, you will provide legal services across the enterprise, focusing on legal and regulatory matters impacting the Chief Privacy Office, Chief Data Office and Technology & Operations, including Global Cybersecurity.

Please note, this is a 12-month fixed-term role.*

What will you do?



Act as key senior legal advisor to RBC enterprise businesses and functions and be responsible for providing legal advice and thought leadership on existing and new privacy, data and AI related legislation and guidance (including issues of jurisdiction), and provide sound, creative and practical advice on the application of legislation to complex areas. Provide input on data, AI, cybersecurity and privacy issues impacting third party supplier and client agreements. In the case of potential data or privacy breaches and incidents, assessing relevant agreements to articulate and advise on legal obligations and consider implications thereof. Contribute to team efforts to align with enterprise objectives and legal risk tolerance to enhance delivery of timely, effective and innovative legal services. Collaborate with business and functional partners to advise on areas of specialty and help mitigate related risk across all impacted lines of business. In this role, you will communicate and interact frequently with RBC partners and employees located across Canada and worldwide.

What do you need to succeed?



Must-have



JD/ Bachelor of Law (Common or Civil Law) from a recognized law school and member of the Bar in any Canadian Province or Territory 5+ years of relevant experience gained in private practice or in-house roles Experience analyzing legislation and interpreting requirements for businesses to operationalize Excellent communication, negotiation and drafting skills Strong problem-solving and risk assessment skills, comfortable managing competing priorities and complex matters, ability to work autonomously and make independent decisions.

Nice-to-have



Deep knowledge of enterprise businesses and functions, including technology, application and product development Experience facilitating alignment between legal advice and business strategic priorities in complex regulatory environments Experience advising on complex data licensing issues, including those involving open-source licensed code and products Technical expertise including experience in software development, data, statistical or business intelligence analysis IAPP certification in any jurisdiction
