Job Title Senior Counsel



What is the opportunity?

As Senior Counsel, you will provide legal support to and identify and manage legal, reputational and regulatory risks relating primarily to Canadian Personal Banking Deposit Products and Savings and Investments Products. This position will report to Managing Counsel, Personal Banking Products and will be located either in Toronto or Montreal.

What will you do?

  • Provide legal services primarily to Canadian Banking personal banking and savings lines of business.
  • Act as legal and regulatory expert for personal banking and savings products, including group banking products, for Canadian Banking.
  • Partner with the business unit and advise of anticipated changes in legal requirements affecting its activities and operations, having regard to the business unit's strategic goals, objectives, business plans and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with business risk and compliance functions on regulatory compliance issues relating to the products and lines of business supported, and help develop risk appetite for the lines of business.
  • Participate in industry meetings of specialists.
  • Support transformational projects and new initiatives undertaken by the lines of business including under agile project delivery methods.
  • Collaborate with other members of RBC Law Group and other functional units to provide legal advice and support across horizontal business initiatives.
What do you need to succeed?

Must-have
  • Qualified as a lawyer in Canada in common and/or civil law
  • 7+ years of relevant experience gained in private practice or in-house roles.
  • High level of proficiency in specialized and complex areas of law, particularly banking and consumer protection law.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills.
  • Strong risk assessment and business judgment, and be comfortable managing competing priorities, making independent decisions.
  • Experience working under tight deadlines
Nice-to-have
  • Working knowledge of French would be an asset
  • Knowledge of agile methods of project delivery
