Job Description


Our client, a Canadian multinational energy transportation company with a focus on the transportation, distribution, and generation of energy, has an immediate need for a Senior Corporate Communications Advisor. This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Calgary or Vancouver.

Description

The Senior Corporate Communications Advisor will provide key support to achievement of the Enterprise\'s business goals and objectives by executing the Canadian portion of the media relations function. The successful incumbent will function as the voice of company within the media.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Build and foster relationships with key journalists covering company and its affiliates, respond to media inquiries, proactively communicate key messages/stories.
  • Develop and execute media relations plans to advance business objectives.
  • Develop media-focused strategic plans around issues, projects, and announcements.
  • Coordinate with media relations counterparts and others across PACS and the enterprise to ensure effective execution of strategic plans and successful management of issues.
  • Prepare and deliver media-specific key messages and Q&As, often in consultation with other members of the Public Affairs and Communications team, senior leaders and/or subject matter experts. When necessary, facilitate media training for key leaders and others who act as representatives of the enterprise.
  • Develop additional communication material such as blogs, OPEDS, fact sheets, web copy and other collateral in support of the company and B.C. projects.
  • Prepare and disseminate news releases and other associated communications materials.
  • Provide strategic communications advice and counsel to senior executives on issues and recommended communications initiatives/response.
  • Ensure corporate messages are communicated consistently, appropriately and in a timely manner to all key audiences, through the integration and coordination of all communications initiatives, and close alignment with External Affairs, CSR and Sustainability, Community and Indigenous Engagement, and other areas in Enterprise Communications.
  • Provide strategic media relations advice and counsel to PACS and executives on issues and recommend communications initiatives/response.
  • Manage relationships with news clips service providers, address any ongoing issues or service quality improvements, oversee the daily media reports etc., and provide monitoring and reporting for quarterly financial results and other events, as required.
  • Develop and execute media training across the organization as required.
Scope/Dimensions:
  • Work independently to develop and implement communications activities with minimal management oversight.
  • Lead small teams of people on a project-by-project basis.
  • The role requires an individual who is politically astute and perceived as credible by media and general public.
  • The individual will also need to be familiar with a corporate environment and skilled in understanding and supporting executive management.
  • Day-to-day interaction through meetings and conference calls with communications colleagues throughout the organization as well as interaction with other departments and corporate functions.
  • Must be able to develop and execute on strategic communications plans with minimal direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to respond to quickly shifting priorities and wiling to assist with development of communications to a variety of audiences when required.
Qualifications:
  • Degree or diploma in communications, business, public relations, journalism, or related field.
  • Experience in and understanding of a large, public company with operations in multiple regions.
  • Passionate about and experienced in building strong relationships with media organizations, reporters, and producers through effective media relations.
  • Solid understanding of external communication best practices and connection to peers in other organizations to research and apply changes in evolving approaches and tactics.
  • Strong communications skills and knowledge, and detailed understanding of communication theory and its application in the effective integration of corporate messages.
  • Driver\'s Abstract required.
Technical Skills
  • Outstanding writing skills, with experience and comfort writing for internal audiences and supporting executive leaders to deliver internal speeches and messages.
  • Strong customer focus with the ability to listen, identify key issues, advise, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sharp analytical skills to quickly analyze complex situations, determine key issues and messages, and implement the programs.
Social Process (People) Skills:
  • Team-oriented attitude and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization.
Additional Information:
  • Typical professional work hours 40-50 hours per week that could extend to weekends and evenings for special projects, emergencies, or dissemination of news releases.
  • This is a high-profile role that will require some travel (other offices and possible pipeline ROW communities for local media relations activities).
  • When not travelling, Calgary Candidate will work the current Hybrid Model - In-Office (Monday, Tuesday & Thursday) Remote (Wednesday & Friday) and Vancouver Candidate will be fully remote.
