Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Academic Program Management, develops, organizes, promotes, and leads workshops, events, and counselling sessions that encourage cohesion among students and intercultural exchange, while providing individual student support on issues related to campus and community integration. Helps the sector meet its marketing and communication goals in order to promote the timely integration of students into Second Language Intensive Programs, the University of Ottawa, and the larger community.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develops, organizes, promotes and leads weekly socio-cultural activities and off-campus outings, while developing and following contingency plans for potential emergencies, in order to develop a cohesive learning community within Second Language Intensive Programs.
  • Leads, plans, develops, and evaluates program orientations and workshops for students on topics such as dealing with culture shock, mastering intercultural communication, managing intercultural conflicts, adjusting to the host culture, identifying key services on campus, and effectively transitioning into academic programs to accelerate student integration into the University and the surrounding community and to ensure that students are properly supported.
  • Serves as a first point of contact on issues related to student life, adaptation to campus and Canada, , housing, volunteer and job search, and aspects of daily living in order to ensure that students have the information and support they need to flourish at the University of Ottawa.
  • Coordinates, plans, and evaluates student support activities such as clubs, mentoring, buddy systems, and campus/community involvement initiatives with current students and alumni. Recruits, supervises, and evaluates monitors for these activities. Develops partnerships and works closely with sectors within the University and in the surrounding community such as homestay agencies, volunteer groups, and community service organizations to ensure student integration into the campus and the community.
What you will bring:
  • Training in cross-cultural communication, intercultural conflict and mediation techniques, normally acquired through postsecondary education or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of three years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in coordinating and facilitating programs and events
  • Experience in working in an environment involving international students and/or adult second- language learners is an asset
  • Sound judgment, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to counsel international students
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems, and to identify and recommend improvements to program services
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, set priorities and organize schedules to meet firm deadlines
  • Good public speaking skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, and to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Bilingualism \xe2\x80\x93 French and English (oral and written)
