Our Toronto office is seeking a Senior Consultant \xe2\x80\x93 Environmental Assessment (EA) to play an active role in the continued development of Arup\xe2\x80\x99s Sustainability and Environmental Consulting business. The successful candidate will be working with a creative, innovative, and self-motivated team of engineers and multi-disciplinary colleagues in Toronto, our other Canadian offices, the USA, South America region, and across the world. The role will support projects spanning a variety of sectors (commercial, government, institutional and transportation projects). You will complement our existing Sustainability, Climate and Environmental Consulting team by providing consulting services related to environmental impact assessment, environmental management and environmental compliance.
The role entails developing and leading the environmental services on our projects, managing your own projects, and being supported by the wider team as necessary. The projects will be diverse and exciting ranging from building scale to larger infrastructure such as transit and bridges. This is an opportunity to participate in creating a strong local team in Toronto, with increased exposure and more responsibility early in the role.
Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:
\xc2\xb7 Lead EA work for various clients and projects; a strong knowledge of one or more EA processes in Canada is necessary; this may include Federal, Comprehensive, or Class (including Transit Project Assessment Process, Municipal or other similar process);
\xc2\xb7 Oversee both sub-consultants and internal staff in the completion of technical studies to support the EA process including the compilation of technical material to produce study and project reports;
\xc2\xb7 Possess a strong technical understanding of environmental disciplines within the impact assessment process; this may include natural environment (aquatic, terrestrial, habitat, species at risk, wetlands, sensitive areas), socio-economic (noise and vibration, air quality, transportation and traffic) and cultural heritage (built heritage, archaeology);
\xc2\xb7 Incorporate sustainability, emissions reduction and climate resiliency into project work;
\xc2\xb7 Support clients in planning Indigenous and stakeholder consultation during EA projects including preparing technical content for public meetings and with other interested parties;
\xc2\xb7 Foster and maintain excellent relationships with sub-consultants, regulators, elected officials, public interest groups, Indigenous communities and other parties involved in our project work;
\xc2\xb7 Demonstrate superior interpersonal and negotiation skills in working with other entities, and addressing potentially contentious impacts associated with project work;
\xc2\xb7 Apply extensive experience and understanding of environmental legislation including the Environmental Assessment Act and many other regulatory requirements pertaining to the natural environment, species at risk, water, heritage, and resource management;
\xc2\xb7 Advance Arup\xe2\x80\x99s internal corporate initiatives and practices regarding sustainability, including climate related objectives, and nature based solutions; promote these externally and apply to projects;
\xc2\xb7 Understand various procurement and delivery models including Private Public Partnerships and Design-Build;
\xc2\xb7 Ensure the planning and completion of post EA obligations such as permits and approvals, and compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations during implementation and construction;
\xc2\xb7 Maintain and expand current knowledge of environmental best practices, monitor emerging legislation, new technologies, and changes to current environmental approval processes;
\xc2\xb7 Participate in professional technical committee work, for example: Professional Associations;
\xc2\xb7 Demonstrate knowledge of the Brownfield Act, environmental site assessment and remediation, risk assessment and excess soil management legislation in Ontario, and/or environmental management;
\xc2\xb7 Be responsible for project management of multiple projects to ensure successful delivery to meet client objectives \xe2\x80\x93 on time and budget;
\xc2\xb7 Work to develop client relationships, pursuing new business opportunities and have experience developing proposals;
\xc2\xb7 Contribute to Arup\xe2\x80\x99s research and development activities; and,
\xc2\xb7 Have a working knowledge of relevant software, including Microsoft Office suite of software.
Qualifications
\xc2\xb7 Qualified professionals will have a Bachelors or Master\'s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Planning or a related field, and a proven track record of at least 10-15 years in the Environmental Assessment and Planning industry.
\xc2\xb7 A professional designation, or eligibility, in Canada such as P.Eng., P.Geo. or a Professional Planning designation would be an asset.
\xc2\xb7 Have excellent communication skills essential for team-based working, excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment, and be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.
\xc2\xb7 Be able to manage multiple projects through project planning, resourcing, budgeting, monitoring and successful project delivery.
\xc2\xb7 The applicant must be fluent in both written and spoken English. French language skills are an asset.
