Position Summary



We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Construction Safety Officer to oversee all safety aspects of a large-scale multi-family residential construction project. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring full compliance with all regulatory and company safety requirements, while promoting a culture of safety and accountability on site. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as a deep understanding of construction safety practices.

Key Responsibilities



Safety Leadership & Compliance



Lead the on-site safety program and serve as the primary contact for all safety-related matters.

Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal occupational health and safety regulations.

Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to proactively identify and correct unsafe conditions.

Maintain and enforce the site-specific safety plan (SSSP) and documentation.

Training & Communication



Deliver site orientations and toolbox talks for all workers and subcontractors.

Coordinate ongoing safety training and ensure certifications are up to date.

Act as a liaison between field personnel, management, and subcontractors on all safety concerns.

Promote a safety-first culture by coaching and mentoring site teams.

Incident Management



Lead investigations of incidents, near misses, and safety violations; prepare comprehensive reports and recommend corrective actions.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and safety activities.

Ensure proper reporting and follow-up with WorkSafeBC and other authorities as required.

Project Coordination



Work closely with the Project Manager and Site Superintendent to integrate safety into project planning and execution.

Participate in project meetings and contribute to decision-making on safety-related matters.

Assist with risk assessments and method statements for high-risk activities.

Qualifications



CSO Certification (recognized in BC) is required; NCSO or equivalent is an asset.

Minimum 5-10 years of safety experience in construction, with at least 5 years in a lead or senior CSO role.

Experience on multi-family residential projects or large commercial sites is preferred.

Strong understanding of WorkSafeBC regulations and OH&S best practices.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software (e.g., SiteDocs, Procore).

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and drive safety performance on-site.

WORKING CONDITIONS



Job Site-Based:

The role is primarily based on active construction sites, which may include exposure to noise, dust, uneven terrain, and varying weather conditions.

Physical Demands:

Frequent walking, standing, climbing, and navigating active job sites are required. Occasional lifting of materials or safety equipment (up to ~25 lbs) may be necessary.

Weather Exposure:

Work takes place outdoors in all seasons. Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times and provided by the employer.

Extended Hours:

Hours may vary depending on project needs and site activity. Occasional early starts, late finishes, or weekend work may be required to conduct inspections or respond to safety concerns.

High-Visibility Environment:

The CSO must be constantly alert to site activities, heavy equipment, and worker movement to maintain personal and team safety.

Communication Demands:

Regular communication with tradespeople, supervisors, subcontractors, and management is required. The CSO must be assertive, approachable, and consistent in enforcing safety protocols.

Documentation & Reporting:

The position involves frequent use of safety software, email, and reporting tools, sometimes under time constraints or during high-pressure situations (e.g., incident response).

PPE Requirements:

Steel-toe boots, hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, and hearing protection are required at all times while on site.
