Unit Summary

Communications & Public Affairs staff members are responsible for the formal internal and external communications programs at Hamilton Health Sciences, providing strategic PR counsel to the hospital\'s leaders. The department\'s responsibilities include internal communications, media relations, community and government relations, web development, event planning, corporate publications, branding and marketing.

Position Summary

The Senior Communications Advisor reports directly to the Manager of Communications & Public Affairs, Executive Lead and Site Administrator, and/or other members of the Executive Team, including the President of Hamilton Health Sciences. The Senior Communications Advisor regularly provides strategic advice to the Executive Team on a wide range of critical communication issues related to the organization\'s corporate as well as clinical/program activities (hospital funding, organizational change, patient safety and media relations). Although having access to the support of the overall PR Team, the Senior Communications Advisor is relied upon to work independently as a consultant. Communications leadership provided by the Sr. Public Relations Specialist is expected to go beyond the organization to support the development of strong working partnerships with other hospitals and health partners across the region, the province and the country.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days (willing to work after hours, weekends and on-call on department rotation basis)

This position is temporary until October 2024

Qualifications

1. University Degree in Journalism (preferred) or University Degree and a Certificate/Diploma in Public Relations or Communications
2. Minimum seven (7) years experience in public relations or journalism
3. Extensive experience and knowledge of health services and health care, preferably within a large, complex organization such as an academic teaching hospital
4. Exceptional writing and editing skills with a strong story sense and an ability to translate complex ideas and concepts into compelling, readable copy
5. Demonstrated maturity and excellence in communication, team building, interpersonal communication and the ability to initiate and model positive change
6. Evidence of success in complex project management and issues management
7. Evidence of commitment to teaching and learning
8. Evident leadership qualities and a demonstrated ability to lead
9. Experience in media relations, community relations and government relations
10. Public speaking experience
11. Demonstrated creativity and design skill
12. Goal oriented with ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines
