Job Summary
The Senior Clinical Researcher is responsible for performing highly skilled research in the field of hip health and mobility, primarily in the domain of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Responsibilities include conducting and advising on technical research designs and experiments, developing research protocols, and guiding the interpretation of results. The Senior Clinical Researcher will collaborate with internal and external teams, contribute to ethics and grant applications, and review research papers on CP hip health and mobility. The incumbent will identify research opportunities, assist in program planning and budgeting, and engage in community outreach through webinars and events. The role also involves leveraging research findings for further studies, process improvements, and advancing care standards.
Organizational Status
The UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.
The Hippy Lab promotes pediatric orthopedic health locally and globally through a variety of growing international research and outreach programs, including world-leading prospective longitudinal registries, region-specific and culturally appropriate care pathways, and a global community of hip health advocates. This team is supported by the UBC Department of Orthopedics, which has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care.
The incumbent reports to the Principal Investigator and may take general direction from Lab Directors. They will work closely with clinicians, faculty, staff, staff, and student within the lab and Department.
Work Performed

  • Identifies gaps in existing knowledge, formulates research questions, and conceptualizes study design to address key evidence needs; prioritizes areas for investigation based on impact and relevance.
  • Serves as principal or co-principal investigator on research projects, providing leadership and oversight throughout the study lifecycle.
  • Advises on the design of experiments and research studies, develops and revises research protocols, and guides data interpretation and analysis.
  • Identifies and prioritizes research development opportunities; proposes program plans and resource budgets, and reports progress to senior leadership.
  • Liaises with healthcare professionals and researchers (e.g., physiotherapists, surgeons, radiologists, biomedical scientists) to provide expert guidance and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Supports knowledge translation and relationship management through community engagement activities such as webinars, workshops, and presentations at professional and public events.
  • Ensures compliance with ethics protocols and regulatory requirements across all research activities.
  • Contributes to and prepares research reports, ethics submissions, and grant applications.
  • Assesses risks associated with research projects and develops effective mitigation strategies.
  • Independently designs data collection methodologies and systems (e.g., surveys, databases, registries), leads their development, and oversees implementation to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • Directs the work of junior team members and allocates resources strategically to support high-impact research.
  • Drives innovation and continuous improvement by staying current with advancements in CP hip health and mobility research; collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and test new techniques, prototypes, and proofs-of-concept.
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage research findings for future studies, process enhancements, or improvements in standards of care.
  • Attends scientific meetings and presents research at leading conferences such as AACPDM.
  • Other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to plan or follow up on initiatives and poor judgment or errors dealing with such matters would have an adverse effect on the Mulpuri Lab (HIPpy Lab) research productivity, reputation, and operational management of the Lab. Ability to work collaboratively and exercise sound judgment in dealing with administrative matters where there may be no established policies, procedures or guidelines is essential. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on campus and community relations.
Errors in the management of research agreements and practices could result in unusable data and damage to reputation and relationships with collaborators and contributors. Errors in the management of accounts, as well as errors in reporting procedures, could result in a waste of financial resources, non-renewal of research funding, or loss of currently held funding. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication, and planning may adversely affect the image and reputation of the Lab and its parent organizations (BCCHRI, UBC, PHSA).

This position works independently under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Lab Directors
Supervision Given
The incumbent may provide direction to students and junior team members; oversee the academic work of and demonstrates techniques to students as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience: Experience working with research and researchers within an academic community is strongly preferred, including familiarity with grant application processes and research ethics (RISe). Experience with project management, communications, and processing and interpreting financial statements are preferred. Appropriate knowledge of UBC and PHSA admin procedures preferred. Experience with clinical research procedures strongly preferred
