When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. The Conversations team builds and operates Square Messages, a messaging platform where hundreds of thousands of merchants manage millions of conversations with their customers across multiple channels (SMS, email, voice, etc.). Messages is also home to -- a virtual assistant to help merchants serve their customers 24/7. The product is scaling up and out: we started with an SMS chatbot to help busy sole proprietors manage their appointments, then we brought merchants into the conversation and integrated horizontally with more Square products and communication channels, and in 2023 we are growing into a paid business line and messaging platform that saves sellers time through generative AI technology.

We\'re looking for engineers with an interest in backend/server engineering to further build out Square Messages, including voice capabilities and ecommerce leadgen tools, as well as to scale our AI infrastructure to serve personalized responses efficiently.

Qualifications

• Play a key role in helping a messaging product grow upmarket
• Build highly available and fault tolerant systems for real-time messaging
• Collaborate with AI, iOS, Android, and web engineers to ship features.
• Collaborate with product managers and designers to iterate on and define product scope and design.
• Ship generative AI to businesses that traditionally haven\'t had access to it

• 7+ years of relevant academic or industry experience
• Experience with distributed system design and implementation
• Experience with AWS and Java is recommended

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate\'s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

This role is also eligible to participate in Block\'s equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
