Join a team that has the environment down to a science.Your OpportunityWe are actively seeking a talented Senior Aquatic Biologist to join our aquatics team. The successful candidate could work from any of our British Columbia or Yukon office (Burnaby, Sidney, Victoria, Terrace, Quesnel, Prince George, or Whitehorse), but would ideally be in the Lower Mainland and work two to five days per week in our Burnaby, BC office (potentially negotiable).As part of a dynamic team, you will work in a team environment and contribute to environmental impact assessments, environmental effects mitigation and monitoring programs, research projects, and permitting under the Fisheries Act and the Water Sustainability Act. Depending on level of expertise, tasks may include conducting or planning field work, data analysis, report and proposal writing and reviewing, preparing and delivering presentations, and business development.As a key contributor to our team, you will shape the future of our freshwater practice, driving transformative projects across BC and beyond in sectors such as mining, energy, transportation, and community development.Your Key Responsibilities

• Manage, plan, and lead field programs (e.g., fish distribution, health, and abundance; lake, river, and stream habitat assessment; water and sediment quality)
• Prepare complex assessment and permitting documents (e.g., Fisheries Act authorization applications, Water Sustainability Act Change Approvals, Waste
• Discharge Authorization applications, Environmental/Impact Assessment technical chapters)
• Contribute leadership to the group by providing supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to junior and intermediate staff
• Assemble, manage, and analyze large datasets
• Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget
• Lead the pursuit of new business development opportunities by preparing proposals and building and maintaining positive client relationships
• Understand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of data from marine intertidal, subtidal and pelagic environments
• Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work

Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work * A people leadership (i.e., Team Lead) position may be available based on interest and qualifications, but is not a requirement for this position.Your Capabilities and CredentialsProven technical, communication, writing and organization skillsFamiliarity with freshwater ecology and knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirementWorking in a collaborative team environmentDeveloping field programs and methods to meet specific project objectivesPreparing Fisheries Act authorization applications with offsetting plansPreparing environmental/impact assessment technical chapters federally and provincially, preferably in British ColumbiaLeading field crews in the execution of field programs including developing health and safety protocols and developing custom field methods when requiredCollecting, managing, and analyzing data (statistical experience is preferred)Leading the preparation of complex, high-consequence technical reports, possibly multi-disciplinaryLeading and contributing to proposals of varying sizesBusiness development through client relationships and/or technical expertiseLeading junior and intermediate staff in data management and report preparationExperience in any of the following is an asset:Developing habitat offset and restoration plansAssessing fish distribution, abundance, and health using desktop, field, and laboratory dataConstruction monitoring and environmental management planning, including fish salvage, underwater noise, and erosion and sediment controlDeveloping field study protocols for and deploying remote operated vehicles or dronesWorking closely with hydrologists and hydraulic modellersEducation and ExperienceBachelor's degree in Biology is required and a M.Sc. or PhD in Biology is preferred.
Current Registered Professional Biologist accreditation with the College of Applied Biology is required.
Minimum of 10 years of experience as an aquatic biologist, 15 or more years preferred, with experience in freshwater ecosystems in British Columbia.
Consulting experience is required.
Other types of safety training are assets: Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement certificate, UTV training, Electrofishing Crew Lead certificate.Stantec British Columbia's standard work week is 37.5 hours. This position is eligible for overtime in the office and field for hours worked in accordance with British Columbia's labour laws.Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation.
