The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s competitive wholesale electricity market. The Strategic Integration team plays a key role in progressing the transformation of Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s electricity system by balancing objectives of affordability, reliability, competition and efficiency as Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s electricity sector is transformed by new technologies and decarbonization objectives. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Strategic Integration, this role integrates crucial considerations from market operations, economic efficiency implications, grid operations, reliability, legal, policy, industry and stakeholder perspectives to develop and advocate for recommendations on strategies, potential changes or actions related to relevant areas. These areas may include affordability, implementation of Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s electricity market framework, coordination of initiatives related to multiple objectives (reliability, efficient markets, reasonable cost, etc.) or other focus areas as required. Key accountabilities:

  • Incorporate a variety of perspectives and employ creativity to develop and defend recommendations which balance trade-offs between complex and competing objectives. Employ an effective balance between conviction and openness to alternative perspectives.
  • Lead cross-functional teams within the organization through effective relationships to build consensus, reflect multiple views and gain alignment toward development of recommendations
  • With the objective of influencing outcomes, analyze, understand and communicate market, cost, reliability, operational or other relevant considerations resulting from increasing amounts of renewable electricity supply, emerging low carbon generation technologies, increasing electrification and other transformative trends on the electricity system
  • Apply subject matter expertise as well as input gathered from other experts to strategically determine priorities and work scope, ensure focused and relevant work efforts and resolve issues
  • Use effective communication strategies to document, educate, build alignment and inform
  • Stakeholder management and engagement including developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders and engaging with stakeholders, either formally or informally, as required.
  • Actively lead group discussions and other processes used to develop recommendations
  • Effective project leadership including identifying risks and mitigations, thinking strategically, and leading through influence
  • Coordinate, facilitate and document outcomes from internal and external discussions on relevant topics
  • Identify, resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion
  • Support other deliverables as required

A combination of these capabilities and experiences will support your success in this role:
  • An undergraduate degree in business, economics, policy, law, engineering or equivalent, or experience equivalent to degree or designation. An advanced degree is an asset
  • Specialized experience in electricity markets or renewable energy policy
  • Previous experience participating in, facilitating or leading stakeholder consultations
  • Understanding of the relationship between legislation, regulation and policy matters, in the context of deregulated electricity markets
  • Change endurance and resilience in working through uncertain outcomes. Our environment experiences changing factors as the pace of change increases.
  • Skill in at planning and performing group facilitation to ensure all perspectives are heard, considered and respected
