The Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the Shared Services and Finance departments. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective cash management, and timely delivery of joint venture reporting packages, while maintaining compliance with Chartwell Retirement Residences' policies and objectives.
Key Accountabilities
Based on Chartwell Retirement Residences' business plan and corporate goals, and in consultation with the Manager, Joint Venture Reporting & Compliance, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for:
Prepare and deliver monthly financial reporting packages for joint venture partners
Develop cash forecasts and support daily cash management activities
Prepare monthly cash flow statements for designated communities
Assist in the annual audits of joint venture properties
Prepare and record monthly rebate entries and utility accruals to ensure timely and accurate recognition of shared service expenses
Review and analyze non-controllable property-level expenses, including utilities, property taxes, volume rebates and other such expenses deemed the responsibility of shared services
Communicate financial results in a timely manner, including variance analyses and account reconciliations
Support the annual budget process through preparation of forecasts and budgets for assigned accounts.
Assist in managing relationships with external consultants and stakeholders
Review monthly working paper packages and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness
Provide mentorship, feedback, and guidance to accountants within the team
Collaborate and communicate effectively with Senior Management, Operations, Accounting Managers, and external third parties, including government agencies
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education:
University degree (Business/Finance related)
Enrolled in or possesses a CPA designation (CA, CGA, CMA) or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
3-5 years of progressive experience in accounting/finance roles
Related industry experience (preferred)
Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of IFRS and Canadian GAAP (required)
Strong computer skills - Microsoft Office (required). Intermediate to Advanced Excel (required)
Public company experience (preferred)
Knowledge of industry specific accounting principles (preferred)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Self-motivated, creative, and reliable
French/English Bilingualism is an asset
