The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (TCWR), is an annual ice road that has been built for decades to service mines and exploration activities in the Northwest Territories; today, primarily to provide re-supply to the Diavik, Ekati and Gahcho K\'ue Diamond Mine Sites. The TCWR beings a Tibbitt Lake (end of Highway 4, known as the Ingraham Trail) and runs north for approximately 400 kms (approx. 85% over ice and 15% over land portages between lakes). Three maintenance camps run along the road and house winter road personnel. Construction of the road commences usually in mid-December with the road opening approximately late-January/early-February. Winter road construction crews monitor and maintain the road to ensure that it meets safety requirements for freight loads.
