Job Summary
Campus Security Services is a department within the Vice President Finance and Operations portfolio that provides security, community safety, personal safety, at-risk prevention services, emergency planning, parking and motor pool services to the campus community at the University of Victoria. In providing these services, Campus Security contributes to creating a safe, secure and welcoming campus for all. The critical nature of these services is provided 24/7/365.


Campus Security serves a diverse client base including students, employees and visitors. The department's employees work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery and effective, efficient and safe adherence to university policies. Together, we support UVic's vision to be a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty, and staff from Canada and around the world and to enhance UVic's reputation among the best universities in Canada and the world.


The University has a population that consists of approximately 5,660 faculty and staff as well as over 21,965 students with 3500 students who reside on campus, and over 150 buildings on 163 hectares and 20 parking lots containing over 4200 stalls.


The Campus Security Officer is responsible for providing impartial and professional security services that promote the safety and well-being of all members of the university community. The Campus Security Officer is expected to approach security in a proactive and service-oriented manner, responding to incidents, ensuring compliance with university policies and Standard Operating Procedures, and maintaining the physical security of the campus environment. The Security Officer is entrusted with the safety of the university's physical assets and its community members.


The role requires proactive patrolling, Emergency Response, first aid, training new security personnel when required and collaboration with university staff, local law enforcement, and emergency responders to ensure the campus remains a safe and secure place to learn and work.


Job Requirements

Experience:




This position requires experience in a related working environment.


Experience in Security, law enforcement, emergency response, first aid, firefighting, ambulance services, search and rescue, social work, bylaw enforcement, lifeguarding, customer service roles with conflict resolution experience or mental health roles is considered an asset.


All Security Officers

must

obtain and maintain a BC security worker license; Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector and must have and hold a valid class 5 or higher BC driver's license prior to commencing work.


Specialized Knowledge/Education:




A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional certifications are considered an asset. (e.g. De-escalation and critical incident management, psychological first aid) Certification in Intermediate Occupational First Aid, Emergency Medical Assistant - First Responder (EMA-FR) Training with Licensing and as required by legislation and WorkSafe requirements are mandatory and must be obtained within the first six months of employment as a condition of employment.

The following are required within the first six months of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment:


Occupational First Aid Certificate - Intermediate. Emergency Medical Assistant - First Responder (EMA-FR) and Licensing Qualification. Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute. Other mandatory training as identified by the University of Victoria and Campus Security Services.

Skills/Abilities:

Communicate effectively in emergencies or high-stress situations by providing clear, concise directions, applying trauma-informed practices with empathy, and handling contentious, sensitive, and confidential matters with discretion, integrity, and professionalism. Remain calm and effective under pressure while demonstrating initiative in de-escalation, problem resolution, triage, and violence risk assessment. Possess strong knowledge of emergency response protocols, including fire safety, first aid, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Produce clear, concise, and accurate incident documentation using incident reporting software and standard office equipment, with excellent observational and note-taking abilities and a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute. Work efficiently both independently and as part of a diverse team, adapting to changing priorities while maintaining attention to detail. Uphold departmental codes of conduct, university policies, and the provincial Security Services Act requirements. Demonstrated ability to manage interpersonal and team conflicts using active listening, mediation, and problem-solving strategies to promote a respectful and productive work environment.

Physical Requirements:




Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods, lift and carry equipment or supplies as needed up to fifty pounds and respond quickly to emergencies, including running or moving swiftly. Capability to carry out all patrol duties, including climbing stairs, performing first aid procedures, utilizing computers, riding bicycles, and managing dispatch services.

Additional requirements:




Ability to monitor and operate security devices (Alarms, CCTV}, including a dispatch center. Availability to work up to 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and in adverse weather conditions.
