I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities




Working as part of the camp leadership team, the Section Head, Arts & Special Programs oversees and supports the design, delivery, and evaluation of all arts-based activities and camp-wide special programs. This role ensures that both arts programming (visual arts, crafts, performing arts, music, creative expression, etc.) and special events (theme days, evening programs, camp-wide games, welcome activities, and pop-up experiences) are intentional, engaging, and accessible for guests of all ages and abilities.


The primary role of the Section Head, Arts & Special Programs will be to ensure the safe and engaging operation of their program area and ensure that staff are adequately trained to support program participants in the organized activities. The Section Head, Arts & Special Programs will model expectations by facilitating programs alongside their team while having a role in staff training and development. Additionally, the Section Head, Arts & Special Programs will also act as a liaison between staff team and the camp leadership team.

II. Essential Functions

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:



Lead the development of creative, engaging, and outcome-based program plans for all arts and special programming areas in collaboration with Camp Counsellors. Create structured program templates, lesson plans, and facilitation guides for staff, ensuring activities are accessible, adaptable, and age appropriate. Plan, supervise and facilitate arts and special programs for guests of all ages and abilities. Collaborate with program staff to organize, plan, supervise and facilitate special activities and events for guests of all ages and abilities. Special programs may include welcome activities, camp-wide games or events, evening programs, sunrise programs, pop-up programming, parent-centric events, etc. Work with the program team to create program plans as a resource for activities and events and provide staff with adequate resources and information to facilitate these programs for guests. Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and materials is tracked for arts and special programs area and work with the Camp Coordinators to purchase necessary supplies to deliver programming/. Collaborate with the arts staff in the curating, planning and execution of all arts-based programming and activities. Collaborate with the special programs staff in the curating, planning, and execution of all special programs-based programming and activities. Ensure programming is engaging and appropriate for the age, ability and interests of the program participants. Ensure staff are meeting and maintaining safety standards in all specialty areas. Facilitate programs alongside other team members within your specialty area (and other areas if qualified and trained). Provide leadership to program facilitators, including supervision, coaching and support within specialty area. Promote and encourage participation in programs through endorsement of activities to guests. Provide clear communication to all guests, including program announcements and any changes to the programs. Assist guests in other areas of the camp, which include dining room duties (i.e., setting tables, serving meals, clearing plates, taking on the role of a Meal Lead, etc.). Take on rotational responsibilities as the on-call, Manager on Duty (MOD). The MOD is the acting lead in emergency situations and will be responsible to responding to calls on the MOD phone during coverage. Communicate clear expectations to staff and volunteers about their role before, during and after the program. Maintain documentation of any accidents or incidents and provide this documentation to Supervisor, Camp Programs. Act as a liaison between program staff and volunteers and the camp management team, reporting pertinent and important information in a timely fashion and working to resolve situations in collaboration with the camp management team. During the spring season (April-June): Responsibilities will include setting up program areas and ensuring that all required resources are available. Helping with property maintenance tasks around camp to ensure that camp is ready to welcome guests. Working as a member of the leadership team, the Section Head may be required to take on additional duties in other program areas on an as needed basis. Other duties as assigned

III. Qualifications



Knowledge and Skill Requirements



Background in arts (visual, performing, music) an asset. Event planning experience an asset. Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy and communication. Customer service experience an asset. Ability to resolve conflict and take a lead role in emergency situations. Must have strong organizational, planning and leadership skills. Current (within 6 months of start date) Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening. Current Standard First Aid and CPR "C". Ability to work flexible hours in a changing and busy environment and work outside for extended periods of time. Must reside at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season (May-August) and be willing to share accommodations with other staff members.

Experience and Education



Enrolled in a Recreation and Leisure, Education, Youth Worker or equivalent program an asset. Experience working in camp or other recreation programs required. Experience as a supervisor or team leader an asset. Experience working with volunteers an asset.

Work Environment



Outdoor work required in this position. Working outdoors may include exposure to weather, sun and heat exposure. May require moderate levels of physical exertion. Respects the importance of confidential information while effectively functioning as a team member or working independently. This position may require the ability to work occasional overtime/flex time. Ability to work flexible hours in a dynamic and busy environment, with frequent interruptions. Must reside at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season and be willing to share accommodations with other staff member.
