This position works out of our Ottawa, Ontario location in the Point of Care, Diagnostics division. We\xe2\x80\x99re empowering smarter medical and economic decision making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott\xe2\x80\x99s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.

Our Point of Care diagnostic portfolio spans key health and therapeutic areas, including infectious disease, cardiometabolic, informatics and toxicology.

As a member of the chemistry engineering team, you will play a key role in performing material qualifications to support continuity of supply for new vendor lots of incoming materials across multiple product platforms. You will also contribute to the team\xe2\x80\x99s success by executing experiments designed to identify, measure and control critical-to-quality attributes related to our chemistry accepted materials, with a strong emphasis on understanding root-cause and mechanism.

What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Do

Assist with the material management and continuity of supply of chemistry accepted materials by performing verification-based material qualifications for new vendor lots of materials.

Work with a cross-functional team (internal colleagues and external vendors) to identify sources of variability impacting product performance, when implementing different vendor lots of chemistry accepted materials.

Provide technical leadership to scope, plan and execute investigations, verifications, and manufacturing process and/ or design changes.

Develop efficient execution strategies for complex tasks, communicate clearly and build team consensus.

Gather and analyze data, create, and execute experimental and verification strategies to develop and demonstrate high process capability and product performance.

Prioritize problems and lead/ participate in investigations and root cause analysis.

Manage documentation updates through the design control system by drafting document updates and driving approvals in the electronic document system.

Consistently apply quality systems requirements and procedures.

Mentor other scientists and engineers, modeling and encouraging creativity, innovation, data-driven decision-making, and careful use of the scientific method.

Maintain contact with managers and group members of related process engineering areas, including manufacturing, research and development, quality assurance and test.

Maintain a high level of expertise in manufacturing processes and their impact on product performance and actively use this to manage risk.

Keep up to date with the latest technical developments in related areas, assess and integrate appropriate changes to work practices.

Required Education and Experience:

A bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in engineering, science, or closely related discipline, plus demonstrated competence, with 5+ years of significant science/ engineering and/ or operational experience. A post-graduate degree is desired and may contribute towards the required years of experience.

Ability to design experiments, analyze and interpret data and document conclusions with appropriate attention to detail; experience using statistical methods is an asset.

Analytical skills, creativity and innovative approach to problem solving.

Ability to determine required analysis to make practical, objective decisions about the best solutions to problems.

Effective at planning and coordinating, with excellent time-management skills.

Ability to build and use an effective network of people inside and/ or outside the organization to give and receive information and to accomplish work objectives.

Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; able to deal effectively with people on all organizational levels and work in a team environment across departments.

Enthusiasm and propensity to continuous learning and experimentation.

Resourcefulness, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Familiarity with any of the following is an asset: analytical chemistry, chemistry techniques and equipment, process engineering, root cause analysis, statistics, and statistical software packages such as Minitab and SAS JMP, ISO/FDA regulations, risk management/FMEA methods, GMP and LEAN Six Sigma manufacturing principles.
