Scientific Operations Specialist

. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


The Locomotion & Imaging in Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (LIMB) Laboratory employs advanced medical imaging and motion analysis, including biplane fluoroscopy and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to understand how structure, motion, and loading affect musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis. As a member of the LIMB Lab, this position reports to the LIMB Lab director, and will have impact within the lab and the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. This position requires working with ionizing radiation and in a biosafety level 2 environment.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):


Laboratory Coordination

Coordinate day-to-day laboratory operations Manage inventory and procurement of lab equipment, materials, and supplies Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot lab instruments and equipment (e.g., motion capture systems, force plates, testing rigs). Coordinate lab schedules, meetings, maintenance, and collaborations. Oversee lab orientation and training for the LIMB Lab. Maintain standard operating procedures, equipment maintenance documentation, technical reports, and experimental procedures. Maintain and update the electronic presence of the LIMB Lab.

Scientific Operations

Validate testing setups required for research studies and/or laboratory improvement. Assist with participant recruitment, experimental setup, data collection, and data processing and analysis.

Analysis and Reporting

Maintain best research practices for data collection, processing, and analysis. Provide review of scientific communications, reports, documentation, and programming code. Support Ethics and funding agency applications. Perform other related duties or projects as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:



A BSc in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field is required, with biomechanics coursework strongly preferred. Previous experience working in a research or clinical laboratory setting. Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to plan and organize projects is required. Strong work ethic and ability to independently drive research projects. Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Prior research experience with motion analysis, biomechanics, mechanical testing, or medical imaging is a strong asset. Experience with biplane fluoroscopy imaging is strongly preferred. Experience writing computer programming code and performing data analysis (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is required. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic research environment.
